hey all, im new here just joined. long story short i was willed this truck. i picked it up in colorado and brought it home.(kentucky) its in good shape, but we are having a heck of a time trying to get it to run. we have fire, we have the timing right(we think), but the intake just fills with fuel. its kind of like it doesnt want to pull the fuel in from the intake. we are not sure what to try next, anyone have any pointers for me. im pretty sure its the 216.

When you say fills with fuel, do you mean that literally? It sounds like your valves are stuck. have you done a compression test?

The carb float is probable stuck to the bottom of the fuel bowl. If gas is pouring into the manifold you will need to pull the carb & clean it out. If you are pumping out of the old tank, make sure it's not water.

Also, if you're using the existing tank, make sure it's cleaned out good. If you run old gas into the engine, you'll have all kinds of things that are stuck. Don't ask me how I know!

i had a guy mention that he thinks it would be the rings stuck. does that make sense or do the valves make more sense? how do i determine the problem, then fix it? this truck was willed to me and im learning as i go here. any help is appreciated. thanks.

Start out with a good dose of penetrating oil in the cylinders, hopefully to free up the rings. Kano Kroil, made in Nashville, is by far the best penetrant out there.

There's at least as good a possibility you're dealing with sticky valves, rather than ring problems. Take the valve cover off, and soak the tops of the valve guides with Kroil, then work the valves up and down repeatedly with a pry bar. Worst-case scenario, you'll need to pull the cylinder head and oil pan, and inspect the cylinders and valves.

Ditto on all the above except the rings.

Yoou don't mention much about the history, last driven, oops It must of run when they parked it.

Really, drain the tank and line and start with fresh fuel with aditive. I'd pull the carb and clean and adjust. May or may not require a kit. While you are doing this, soak the valve train with whatever is mentioned above or diesel.

The only time I have experienced standing fuel in the manifold was from carb, the bowl being stuck. Just me though.
