I've been looking at these heavy hex stainless steel 18-8 nuts for replacement. http://www.mcmaster.com/#stainless-steel-hex-nuts/=7ce40p.your thoughts? | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | You should have a tapered side wheel nut. I haven't seen these in SS and when I go to the page you reference and use the locater I could only bring up 1/4" size. Replacing a standard hex nut with another makes no sense to me. Use the right parts. Any tire store or auto parts should carry them so get their advice. I don't think the Budd style wheel use anything different. | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 62 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 62 | Thanks for the reply these wheels use a standard heavy hex nut, no taper. I guess the question is would the SS be to soft. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | Just as with regular steel there are different kinds of SS so it will depend on the material. Again I would recommend a good tire source for this kind of question. | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | Standard stainless steel in strength is equivalent to Grade 2 and would never be used in conjunction with brake or suspension parts, wheels included. Grade 8 stainless is available, but as Dave suggested, it would be a very good idea to talk with a good tire shop.

One of the tire stores had some for $4.00 ea,just got them from Mc Master for $1.05ea.Very shiny, no need to buff. The SS caps were $1.94 | | |
