The guy I bought it from claims it's rebuilt. It wont upshift unless I take my foot of the gas momentarily and will then shift very smoothly. It also wont shift back down to first until I'm almost at a stop. Now I know the downshift linkage is out of whack. So I'm guessing thats the reason for my second problem but does anyone have any thoughts on it's upshift problems?

Try shortening (or lengthening) the adjustable rod connected from the carburetor linkage to the bellcrank on the transmission. This controls the point where upshifts and downshifts happen. More throttle pressure delays the upshift until a higher speed is reached, but it also will make the downshivt happen sooner. Try reducing the idle speed to help with the shift to 1st. gear at a stop, and drop the throttle pressure to make the upshift happen sooner. The "Controlled Coupling" Hydramatic (No, it's NOT a Jetaway) is VERY picky about throttle pressure adjustments Jerry

Mine has the cast iron case and looks Identical to my 56 transmission besides the oil pan size is smaller and tail shaft is 4 inches shorter. The shop manual I have is for the 56 and gives me a very broad run down on how the linkage works not how to adjust it. I think the engineers didnt even know how to do it.
