I'm guessing your 53 is stock, 216 if so that canister is only a by-pass oil filter anyway. Meaning only a small portion of the oil gets filter unlike a 'full flow' system in which all the oil goes through the filter. So if it's stock motor I'd leave it alone. If you want to go spin on just for looks that wouldn't hurt just does nothing for the motor.

You'll get better filtering with the canister element, unless you go to some type of spin-on industrial hydraulic oil filter with a very tight micron-number filter media. Full-flow spin-on filters strain out rocks, marbles, and horse collars, and let the other stuff pass through. You'll also need to install a restrictor in the spin-on filter tubing to limit the oil pressure drop. My advice is to leave it alone.

kip...oil filter questions are fairly common here so if you do a search on them I'll bet you will get a lot of info. You may have to do a fair amount of reading but you'll get the knowledge. TRY ASKING THE QUESTION OR SEARCHING WITH DIFFERENT WORDS as our search device isn't exactly the best.

Thank you, I just learned a lot about oil filtering system, I am in the process of reassembly of this basket case and did not know there was such a difference in filter systems. Will clean this one up and attach back to original place on fender. You guys are awsome.
