Hey guys. I need some ideas on swapping from 6lug to 5lug. I have a 49 3100 with all orginal tranny to rearend setup. Also need a higher gear ratio. Wanting to go the least expensive way of course also. Thanks in advance.

I used the rear from a '73 Chevelle wagon with 3.08 gears under my Suburban. I've been real happy with it except the one time I tried to pull a trailer with it.

The least expensive would be to locate a FREE 3:55 ratio car rear end say, 1951-54. These were in cars with the powerglide trans. I have a tech tip on this you can check out.
The very best way is to ditch the torque tube and go open drive line and then a zillion better ratio rear ends could be used.

I have a 10 bolt rear in my 53 with 3.55 gears, I'm putting a 350sbc and th350 trans in. I'm very curious to drive this and see what its like.

thanks JiMerit and OldSub on the info. I am looking to do away with the torque tube and all. I am running a 235. What would be nice if i could keep my column shifter, have open drive line, a higher gear for better speeds and 5 lugs. Ha Is this possible? or am i dreaming?

Ive got access to a 66 chevelle 4 door with a straight six in it. Its got 3 speed on the column i believe. dont know what size the motor is though. Would the drivetrain bolt up to my 235 i wonder? I will be searching on here for more info.
