Ok I am having some issues with the size of my engine. I have a straight 6 (original) in a 65 stepside. Its original color is the light green.
I tried to read the number on the pad behind the distributor and I come up with F0720 and then the next number is stamped over with larger K3604. I chaulked the numbers and I am certain of these. The K is on top of another number and I may be able to identify it later.

I was told to look for a TA, TC,TG,UH,UT used to ID the 6 cylinders.I do not think that advice is correct. Right now all I can say is I have a 292 because they were light green however the books indicates the 292 was used in 60 series only. I have a C10 according to my VIN.

I also do not have any numbers on the front end of the block near the water pump and head, nothing at all. Did all the C10 trucks have the 230 engine? The 230 and 292 appear very similar with exception of the wet and dry air filter. I have dry type but doubt it is original.

If the color of the engine is correct then I have a 292.

Find me a Casting Number, which will not be on a pad, but on the motor's block itself. Repost it here and I'll see if I can find it for you. Should be 7 digits thereabouts.

230/250 will have the fuel pump right under the distributer, the 292 will be in the middle of the engine with the motor mount moved up under the distributer. 292s will alsa have a 2" higher block then the small engines. The side covers are taller and there will be about 2" of block above the waterpump.
Check for the numbers right by where the distributer goes in the block. Joe

I think that is not the original engine, but possibly a re-man, Jasper from the color you describe. That would explain the re-stamping of the serial number. The casting number would be the sure thing to figure out what the block is.

color isn't a very good thing to go off of, in my opinion..

and yes. 292s were offered in C10s.

just check the side covers. its a dead giveaway. they're about 6 inches, where as 230/250 is about 4 inches.

"proper" is so over-rated.

Well I am positive 292s were light green. I did susp ect a new block because it is unpainted and because of the obvious hand stamped numbers on the pad. I have a casting # located in the center of the block very close to dip stick on right side facing fwd. The number is GM 8788406.
The side covers are 4" tall and 13" long. The only thing green is valve cover, head, and oil pan. Fuel pump is located fwd on right side just below distributor. From the info each of you have passed on I no longer think it is a 292 BUT SURE WISH IT WAS.

Thanks for that link Chuck. That was the same info I had earlier but I have nothing close to that on the pad. This is a 3 speed on the column.
That is original for sure. So according to that link, I think I'm looking at a 230 but I will wait and see what 250 supersix comes up with.

Thanks again.

Have you been to the Inliners site? They have a lot of casting numbers listed.

Are you sure that first number is an 8.
There is a block casting 3788406. It's for a 1963-64 230. Used in car and truck.

1965 thru 1970 had 3 block casting #'s for a 230 truck, 3850817, 3854036, 3877178. These same block casting #'s were also used from 1967-72 for a 250.

A 292 from 1963-66, casting 3789404, 3851659, 3921970, and had 7/16" bolt holes in the crankshaft flange.

I checked it again in bright sunlight it reads

8788406
GM
7
This sequence is located right in the middle of the block on the right side. The dipstick is about 1" to the left of the letters GM.

I forgot to tell you that I am postive I do not have a 292. I just received the pushrod gaskets I had ordered for a 292 and they were far too big.

I just went back out and cleaned the numbers real good with contact cleaner and examined them with a magnifying glass. I compared the first number to another 3 on the block. There is a strong possibility that it is a 3 and a very poor one. One has to consider that all it takes is one grain of sand in the casting to mess up a number like this. If I scratch it with my fingernail it feels like there is a little portion missing that would cause it to be a 3. So I will go with that and say it is.
