It has been a while since I looked at those things. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | First VIN is a legal concept with international support that didn't really take hold until the 80's. You have various serial numbers that do not match.
GM trucks in '53 has a body serial number in the driver's side door opening and an engine serial stamped near the distributor. Those numbers are not going to match.
You might personally research the CT law because I suspect it has provisions for old vehicles that your counter person isn't aware of.

(I did get a bit of free frame cleaning from his wire brush.) No amount of talking or manuals would convince him that he would find nothing and that the engine number on the old title was long gone. He finally gave up and the state assigned the body serial number as my VIN. Stamped in on a cheesy metalic sticker and stuck it to the door pillar. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 51 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 51 | So on the 1948-55 1st, they are NOT also on the frame enywhere? Anyone know for sure?

I've looked pretty hard at a few of these frames and sure have never found reason to question the generally accepted statement that its not there.

I did however stamp both of my trucks frames with the vin# for theft reasons. I think it's totally up to you if you want to stamp the frame or not. Just my 2-cents worth... | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | I did a frame off on my 50' no numbers anywhere. Never thought about stamping the number on the frame myself? Might be worth it if the truck ever came up stolen and it was located. Remember the old fashioned theft protection of scratching your Social Security number in things (nobody uses that one anymore). | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | We go over this otopic pretty regularly.
Do a search on +frame +vin
Some states, such as CA required a frame-stamped ID. Someone stamped some frames but no one has posted definitive information about who did it (and for which years: maybe GM (in the Oakland assembly plant), maybe the dealer, maybe the state police, maybe the DMV, maybe ??.
