Once again hello to everyone. Does anyone have any idea why the dash lights come on when I apply my brake pedal? This truck is "home" wired, the way I bought it and I've got everything else right but this one has me fooled. By the way, I installed a cut-off switch right away just in case something happened. Thanks for reading. Any help will be wonderful. Steven

Hi Steven,

My truck was doing exactly the same thing and it was home wired also. I couldn't trace it down so I placed a zenor diode on each tail light wire to resolve the issue. I plan to rewire it this summer, but it was a quick fix.

My guess is bad grounds at the tail light housings, and/or may need a ground strap between bed and frame.

had a similar problem before where the tail light circuit is powered up on the application of the brakes . problem faulty tail light with a short between brake and tail sending 12v back into the tail light / dash light circuit. fix on hotrod with custom lights was to install diode to stop feedback easier than fixing custom lights. That's where I would start at the tail lights isolate one at a time to figure which one it is. Tail lights should be the only place where these two cicuits brakes and tail lights are close together

"...with a short between brake and tail sending 12v back into the tail light ..."

There is not a "short" between brake and tail light. The filaments are connected to a common ground terminal. If the bulb is not properly grounded the 12V travels across the tail light filament seeking a ground, which in your case apparently it found it after traveling to the switch and the dash light circuit.
