Found my 51 Chevy pickup has a 56 chevy 235 engine, with an add on oil filter. Was talking to NAPA dealer today about replacement oil filter, as soon as finish rebuilding carb, am doing oil change. He joked about it being a roll of toilet paper, like "they" did in the old days. Well guess what, yup, found roll of toilet paper inside canister. My measurments 4 1/2 inches tall, 4 inches across, and inside whole 1 1/2 inches across . . buddy at NAPA is checking, anybody here have an idea? Told him to find a replacement and he can have the old one !

Someone marketed an add-on filter years ago that used toilet paper. Yours may be one of them. I'd use a manufactured filter if it were mine.

I used to sell those filters, brand name "Frantz". The ones I used were big truck units, replacements for the LuberFiner 750 that was pretty much standard equipment for all the big rigs in the 50's, 60's and 70's. The Frantz passenger car filters used a standard roll of Dale Earnhardt toilet paper (rough, tough, and won't take crap off anybody!), the cheaper the better! The filtration was capable of removing contaminants down to 2/10 micron diameter, 10 times finer than the standard full-flow filter will remove. The Frantz filter has to be used as a bypass unit, as it can't flow enough volume to supply the bearings' lubrication needs, but they really clean up the oil!

There was an article in Hot Rod magazine about Frantz filters a few months back. Good product.

My brother-in-law said he used to help his uncle service his old Chevy, and he said they just dropped a roll of T.P. in the filter canister.
