Maybe someone can enlighten me. I have a 55.1 3100 that has a bent front axle tie rod. I looked in LMC truck for a new one and they want $329 + shipping for it. The second generation 55 would only run me $29.95 + shipping. In the picture they look like the same thing. What is the $300 difference?

As your probably aware the 2nd series in 1955 was a totally new model, i.e., the TF.
I can't say specifically what the differences are in the two front suspensions but I do know that you cannot make a judgment based on an catalog illustration. Also I think the 29.95 each is for the ends only and not the entire tie rod [censored]'y.

Bent tie rods are not to unusual on the AD trucks. They are right out there in the open where they can be bent by a snow bank, stump or misplaced jack
You can always straighten it. I used my hydralic press to straighten mine, takes only a few minutes to true it up. I made a set of clamps that sit flat on the press frame and keep the rod from turning.

The one on my '58 was bent as well. My neighbor and I took it to his anvil with a sledge and trued it up enough to slide a 3/4" pipe over it. (I know opinions will come out about what I did next.) I then welded the pipe over the rod for added strength. She solid as can be now, won't bend near as easily and it hasn't failed now for the 2 years its been on there. I work at a camp in the summer and the roads are rough. She has held up to that abuse.

All tie rods from 1937 through 1954 pickups are the same. They will all interchange. There should be several at any large wrecking yard near you. If not, Chev's of the 40's stocks them.

i just bought one for my 51 from classic parts for like $36. i went through the same thing at lmc and they couldnt tell me why the big differenc in price, but classic was the way to go

No welding on steering Part!! Hope your luck doesn't run out.
