Hi.

On my 1946, I'm running the old pre SM420 4 speed (the one with the little flippy lever on the shifter), and it's not driving the speedometer.

I pulled the cable off of the transmission, and ran the drill on it, and the speedometer works like a champ. It's not even jumpy.

I've asked around, and my panel of old mechanics tell me that it's probably that the gear that drives the speedometer is stripped.

Any ideas where I can get a new gear? American Classic, Chevs of the 40's, and Jim Carter don't seem to have them. If they do, it certainly wasn't listed in a logical place. (e.g. Transmissions or Speedometers)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try here. They show a couple of drive units. Put speedometer in the search box after clicking on the truck link.

Brendan,

You don't need a speedo on that old girl. No cop in their right mind would believe that our stock 46's would break any speed laws.

I sure know mine wont.

Tiny:

Thanks. I'll email them and ask about that four speed replacement drive unit.

Are you sure you can get up to 45 ?? Interesting, my cable works fine and the rebuilt odometer now shows 12 miles but there is no needle on the speedo so I don’t know how fast I’m going either grin
