Hy handymanmac, I'm afraid I have to disagree with 48bigtrucks statement about the converter not self filling, I checked a couple of maintenance manuals just to be sure my memory was correct. The converter does self fill when the engine is running and the transmission pump is turning, fluid is constantly circulating in and out of the converter. The converter is the place in the transmission that generates the most heat into the fluid, if it didn't circulate through there it would burn in no time. You can prime the converter before installing it, but that is more to prevent dry start damage than it is to put the converters oil supply at a working level. It sounds like you have an internal transmission problem to me or a bad converter, if the linkage is correctly adjusted and the fluid level is correct when the tranny is warm, I would contact the tranny shop that rebuilt your tranny and explain the symptoms, and see if they can suggest anything else to check before you pull it. I had a shop rebuild a Hydramatic once, I changed it on the street in front of my parents house, and no go when it was installed. I called the shop, and they said to bring it back, so I took it out and took it back. They called the next day and said it was ready, so I asked what was wrong with it, after some back and forth the guy admitted that they had left out an oil distribution pipe when they assembled it.
