Good Morning!!! Instead of listing on the swap meet, I listed on Craigs so I could find four rims, 6.00 x 16 narrow rims, locally to make pick up easier. I got two hits. One guy had one. The next reply was a guy who had four, split rims, and gave the dimensions, and it all sounded good. No price or location yet though. So, now, I think back to everything I have heard about split rims and the terror associated with them. I would like to listen to advice about these.... how much should I pay? Avoid them? Run for your life? Patience and look for another set of non split rims? Nothing to worry about if you do it right? All suggestions and opinions appreciated.....

I have to assume your talking about the '47 that I found after looking at your profile???
If I were at the stage you are at now, that is, looking for a new set of rims, I would certainly go with a single piece rim and tubeless radial tires.
Unless your shooting for a factory correct show truck then your just asking for a poor handling, rough rider and a lot of grief, with the split rims, bias ply tires, flaps and tubes.
I've been thru it and so have a hundred other guys here on the forum and in the end after all the expense and aggravation mine ended up stacked in the corner of the garage in case I ever, for some odd reason, decided to build a truck to be judged.
And if you’re the type that has to try it for yourself in spite of what other’s have been through, then go and become one hundred and one.

I am assuming you are speaking of 8 lug split rims, if so i found the modern replacement for my 53 3600. These can be found used and not expensive off a Ford Econoline and the 3/4 and 1 ton stock Chevy and GMC caps will fit with spring clips.

If you are talking about 6 lug steel rims, these are everywhere in reproduction. Check out any Hot Rod type magazine, wheel vendors are out there and can put together anything you need.

Tim got it right..... I am not sure of my profile and the 47 listed and I should change that. The '47 was sold along with the 1945 GMC.... which had the rims I needed. The new project is a long story and there is no way it is going to be put back stock. It is a 1928 Chevy and I am putting a 1950 Chevy donor frame under it to get modern everything, but will need some narrow rims... It is a three to four year project although it is moving along better than I thought. I have a set of wide turbine rims that are beautiful for the truck but they are REALLY wide and I thought about customizing the fenders as well, but like I said, I am in no hurry and will hit the swap meets. I remember split rims in the old days and when we mounted them and inflated them, I remember the mechanics placing the rims under the hoist and lowering the hoist so if the rims cam apart violently, nobody would be hurt. I passed on the rims, by the way. The ad I placed on CL said I needed four and assumed he had four. He had two....

i got 4 split rims from my 47 chevy, 15 inch tho ! and i put on 4 16" FORD rims 8 hole, with raise white lettered radials...looks good, REMEMBER you can put ford on a chevy but chevy rims will NOT fit a ford...fact n the rims were free ////mick
