Pulled the transmission out of Old Red ('48 2 ton) and the clutch bearing cover is busted. That and it leaks oil like a sieve. It does have PTO and it probably leaks too around the seals. About what would I be looking at for a transmission shop to give it a going through, renewing seals and gaskets, and replacing clutch bearing cover? Just a ball park figure. I have the book, but it looks to me like it takes a bunch of special pullers and presses. Maybe this ought to be tackled by someone with experience.

If the trans is working OK it shoulded be hard to replace the seals. By clutch bearing cover do you mean the coller that the TO brg slides on? I don,t know what these shops nowadays would charge but if I could have charged that back in my day I would be rich. You can probably fix the leaks yourself but if you bring it to K.C. I would do it for a nominal fee. George

The clutch bearing cover....should be clutch gear bearing retainer, part no 22 on page7-17 of the 48-51 chevrolet truck shop manual. This is the second one I have seen and both came out of a 2 ton. I guess driving around in hay fields and wheat fields, over ruts and ditches? Still, if the 4 bolts were tight, it shouldn't be stressed in that area. I have another transmission, one that jumps out of third with a serviceable replacement retainer. Maybe I wouldn't have to overhaul it, Maybe I could pull the top andlook inside, but what am I seeing and what am I looking for? I see a gasket set isn't much for this model transmission. I did also plan to upgrade with the emergency brake off a '53 GMC fire truck, although I may have to shorten the driveshaft.

dazysnow,

I am guessing that your transmission is a SM-420. I have linked the Novak site for you to look at. These are pretty tough units, and simple too. I have no clue what it would cost to have a professional shop rebuild it, but I will bet it would be enough to give you a coronary infarction!

Whatever you do, I would stay away from AMMCO type places. Find a small owner/operator shop that might do trucks or off road jeeps.

If the service manager has a purple Mohawk, a nose ring and a stud in his tongue, steer clear of the joint! eek

The retainer off the other trans. should work. Looking inside won,t tell you much. The past performance is the best thing to go by. If it doesn,t jump out of gear & isn,t noisey in the lower gears & the syncros work OK it should be all right. If you have to replace the rear seal you will need a large socket for the rear flange.

I would just get another one, they're a dime-a-dozen. I've got a couple of them. I wouldn't "mess" with a broken one,
