I'm Jim and I have a 1953 1 ton, started out as a 49 but between a cab and fenders and new bed it's morphed into a 53. Also with regards to the rear wheel cylinders, has anyone had any problem getting the bolt holes in a new cylinder to line up with the slots in the backing plate?ause I am!......Aaargh I am having the same problem. I have been working on a 1953 GMC 1 ton fire engine that I picked up about a year ago. Like peeling back an onion, I find myself removing layers and getting deeper and deeper into this project. I have to remind myself that doing this project quickly is not the objective but enjoying my time spent on this truck is.

Stock 17inch tires, disc brakes upfront, stock 350 chevy with 700R4 transmission coupled to a 3.73 rear end for higher cruising speeds and better fuel economy.

I found it on e-bay and had it trailered to the CA north coast. It still has the remnants of the old logo "The Beef Beanery","RESTAURANT and CATERING of PITT Style BBQ, 200 Roberts Lane, 393-8263". I was recently told the business was owned by Skip S? and that he now has a different business (would like to learn more). It was also owned by a Glen then John, now me. The key that came with it has Vincent stamped into it. It is two colors, maroon and medium cream. If anyone out there knows any more about "Vinnie", it's name now, it would be greatly appreciated. ( she's only 5' 1" !) later on my granpa used this truck to move from central illinois down here to arkansas. the bed was an after market with steel sides & wooden stake sides you could put on top of that, a combination grain & stock bed. it was set up that way for the move & loaded all the way to the top. we followed it in our 67 dodge coronet station wagon. my dad says it was about 45-50 mph all the way. later on the truck had caburetor & other issues. grandpa wasn't a mechanic & it was literally put to pasture. that's when i started playing in it & developed my lifelong love affair with AD trucks. | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 55 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 55 | Hi bluechev (Robert), Sounds like great child hood memories. My daily driver in the 70's was a 1 1/2 ton Ford delivery van converted to a camper, yes it looked like a hippy truck. Lots of good memories with my son who was 8 thru 15 at the time. We went cross country several times, once accross in Canada just above the boarder. I'm partial to large vehicles, mostly trucks. Unfortunatly, my daily driver now is a Lincoln Town Car, I can't even see the hood, let alone the nose. I'd love to post photos, but I haven't taken time to learn how. The truck has been used it's entire life and has never had the chance to rot away. I shortened the 9 1/2' bed to 7 1/2'. I replaced the original wood frame rail with 2"x6" (1/4" wall) steel tubing. Then I designed a hinge system, creating a dump bed set up. When I can afford it, I'll put in the hydraulic system to finish it off. I also built custom side racks and headache rack out of 2"x6" douglas fir with a fruit wood stain and a marine grade semi gloss finish. The headache rack has the classic chevy bowtie cut out for the rear window. What an awesome and unique truck to drive every day. I've been ckecking my wheels for 19.5s and looking at more work that will have to be done. Master cylinder is leakin, ? rebuild or new single or dual cylinder,tires are dry rotted hmmm. Wood in flat bed was replaced with locust boards and are rotten, metal bed is pretty ruff. Where do I start hmmm when can I start. The good news is I know what I'll be doin for several months or even years when I get started. I'm really enjoying lookin at all the fine trucks on this site and reading all the tips and info thats free which is cool because my 1 ton will be most of my spare change soon. This truck has been in my family for about 25 years. I started restoring in 2007 I have the drive train all rebuilt and the cab is 90% done. It will be all original except I added rear shocks, Changed the rearend from 5.13 to 4.56 and it has a back sliding glass window.This truck has all the deluxe trim and a fulton visor. The really neat thing is this truck was built on the same month and year that I was born. I am very happy to be a new bolter. Iv'e already got lots of help from you guys. Thanks! Terry
