i need a oil pump pickup tube for my 54 235. i found a couple at a scrap yard but they are pretty nasty looking. i'd rather use a nice clean one in my newly rebuilt motor.

i have not been able to find a new one on the "innertube" or at my local auto parts store.

has anyone found a pickup tube from a different application that works?

has anyone fabricated there own out of a new oil pump pickup tube from a different application? i figured i could dice up a new one and cut some threads on it so it would mount to the pump and its sae threads.

a source for a new '54 oil pickup would work too.;)

You could do the oldtime cleanup method we used 50 years ago- - - - -soak the pickup tube in gasoline, set it outside in the dirt, and toss a match at it. All the sludge turns into nice easy-to-remove ash. Remove the pickup screen first, so it doesn't burn away. This procedure also works on sludged-up road draft tubes.

that is a good tip. i have a whole box of parts i'd like to light on fire.

the oil pump pickups i found are bent, dented and protected by a coat of rust. they can be made to work but not without a bunch of elbow grease.
