The exception is replacing a Integral head with and earlier head. Can you be a little specific as to what is not lining up?

The heads are interchangeable and have the same size valves etc. The manifolds will bolt from one to the other. I have mixed and matched them and haven't noticed a difference.

different between a 292 and 250 in the head is nothing. the only change was the 194 had a smaller cumbustion chamber, so it would up compression if used on a bigger doisplacement engine. other wise...the manifolds are exactley the same. 1969 K20 , with a '67 front clip. fleetside. 292, 3x1 offy, headers. sm465 4spd. getting put back together, almost ready for paint. doing it all myself. 19 and lovin' it. Just don't get one with integral manifolds, they are severly restricted on breathing. The 194 heads will bolt on but are higher compression and with smaller valves, not recommended for any performance increase. All manifolds will bolt up exactly, there is no difference in any of the 4 engine displacements.

please explain exactly what makes an Integral head?
I'm only familiar w/ later swappable heads.

The intake runners are small and not well designed. The exhaust manifold comes off I think??? not 100% sure of that, but it to is a piece of smog crap. Its a very poor design for any kind of performance use. There is no headers or manifolds that work with this head. I threw mine away, never even looked at it!
The early heads with smog tubes are just the same as those with out. They simply drilled holes in the outer part of the exhaust port so the could inject fresh air in to the exhaust flow. The fresh air would help burn out some of the emissions. You can plug them very easy.
All of the other heads are so close in CC's except the 194, that they can be swapped with no problem. Intakes are all the same design as well as the exhaust manifolds. The later 292's might of had a different flange at the pipe outlet, but port design was the same.
The real difference in 230/250 and the 292 is the bore, stroke, block height, and camshaft. All the other parts will interchange. The cams will interchange as well if you use a electric fuel pump. Joe

But the center ports and bolts on the replacement manifold do not line up with cylender head when the outer bolts are installed
(so that was why I thought mabe it was a 250 part)

its the ports are square, its a 292/250. if they're round, 235/261.
or, atleast thats what i think i know...heh. 1969 K20 , with a '67 front clip. fleetside. 292, 3x1 offy, headers. sm465 4spd. getting put back together, almost ready for paint. doing it all myself. 19 and lovin' it. "proper" is so over-rated. .later days. .sam.
