Oil pump is just a few years old. OK.. Follow my logic(more likely my lack thereof) If I put a new oil Filter on (dry, w/out pouring any oil into it first) then crank the motor and let it run for 15-20 seconds, then kill motor and remove brand new filter. My question is then, if the filter is full of oil does that mean the oil pump is working. Is that evidence enough? | | |

You could fill the filter and still burn up your engine. Take the time to test it correctly. Use a known good gauge to check the pressure. To paraphrase the old Fram commercial: Pay me a little now or risk paying me a lot later.

There are lots of folks here with your engine that will be able to help with specifics but they may not check the forum until tomorrow sometime. One of the best things you can do is to purchase a manual for your truck. eBay is a good source for manual reprints. Good luck.

Not sure if that's normal, but it hasn't locked up yet from insufficient oil flow. | | |

I would just change the sending unit, they're cheap and not worth a lot of testing and messin' around.
Or, install a gauge directly into the port temporarily to see what you have. | | |

I installed an inexpensive oil pressure guage Saturday, fired her up, and got a pressure reading of about 25-30 at idle and 35-40 on the move. Sounds like it wasn't the oil pump. Thanks again for the help. It's a 1965 Chevy fltside/swb .My grandfather bought it from the original owner in 1968. I got it when he passed away recently. The motor sounds good(230), but the body is rough, not bad rusty, but every panel has at least one dent.I plan to restore it to as original as practical.I hope to do do all the work myself. The mechanical part doesn't worry me ,I can usually work my way through mech. problems. The body is a different story! Wish me luck. I plan to rely on this site heavily! | | |
