Not sure of the bore, but the engine has been rebuilt. The carb is an Edelbrock 1405 and the problem is it seems to be running a little bit too rich and I have developed a leak at the secondary shaft on the passenger side. I do not have a fuel pressure regulator and my fuel pressure gauge is broken and does not work, but before it broke it was showing about 7 psi. If not for the leak I would have no complaint. I do want to find a good Carter Quadrajet and replace it but the dollar is a bit short at this time. Does anyone have any ideas for fixes to check out? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | 7 lbs. is too much for an Edelbrock AFB type carb. It should be 4-5. If gas runs out the shaft it is flooding. Although I prefer the Q-jet the Edel. is a good carb. Also a lot depends on the manifold. The Carter is a squarbore & the Q-jet is a speadbore. Most basic performance aftermarket manifolds are set up for both. Some manifolds need an adapter to change between the 2 different type carbs. Q-jets are Rochester carbs. although Carter built some of them for them. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I will install one of the pressure regulators that I have laying around. I already have the intake for the AFB set aside, just waiting for the cash to get a carb. Inspection of the heads I took off last weekend indicates the nice brown color on the valves so I think it only floods while at idle or decelerating. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I don't understand. The edelbrock carb. is basically the same as an Carter AFB. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I am looking for an old quadrajet, late 60's or early 70's. When they are right they are great carbs. and I can get a decent air cleaner without all that high-rise junk on my engine. | | |
