A friend of mine showed me this truck behind his apartment. The whole things pretty shot but there are a few things that are ok.I'm restoring a 53 with a babbit 235,I'd rather have a pressurized motor. Is there anything a professional shop could do to save this block?even if I don't use it I have plenty of storage area.

Looks like all the good bits have been scavenged!

Unless a boat anchor is what you had in mind... I think that engine is probably not worth restoring. The rust on the head surface looks pretty extensive, and I'll bet a couple of those pistons are permanently adhered to the cylinders. Looks like a couple snapped off head bolts too.

You should be able to find 235s pretty available and cheap, from people who want to upgrade to something else. Maybe even running!

You can buff most of that out... i'd snake it if given half a chance... worst case, you part it out on ebay.

Another quality post.

I saw a sweet 235 jasper rebuild on e-bay a couple of days ago for $500 w/manifolds, carb, pumps, etc... You can get short blocks or long blocks from some of the vendors for cheap. Rebuilding what you are looking at is gonna require some very expensive machine work IF it can be fixed. So, it isn't gonna be worth it.

Grab the guages, radio for e-bay sale purposes if they are there still there. Other than that... There isn't much on that truck you'll be able to use.

thanks for the input.I'll try try and get the truck(I'd hope for free!)and save any good stuff that I find for the freebies. There isn't anything I can use off the body but I'd hate to see it disintegrate in that field.

Skippie,
You might ask the other guys but, from looking at the pic of your 235. I'd say thats a 216. It looks like a full metal cover on the passenger side of the engine. The 235 only has a cover over the lifters not the plug area.

Glenn, look at the picture a little closer the head is removed and the side cover only goes to the top of the block. No plugs with the head removed, but I could be looking at a diffrent picture.

I agree with Glenn, the picture in Skippy's album looks like a 216, or pre-50 235. A 53 4400 standard motor is a 216 with the 235 option. By 53 the 235 did have the short push rod/ lifter cover. I also agree that the 58/59 pickup motor is pretty well gone. That Fleetside bed definitely looks savable. Good luck, Skip. smile

Hey Skippy, there is a guy in Essex Jct. Vermont (just across the lake) with a 59 truck 235 and trans in the paper for $75. Probably worth it just for the head if it's not cracked or something! No mention of condition, but I can send you the phone number if you want, or pick up the Buyers Digest if you can get it on your side of the Lake. I'd snatch it up if I wasn't a poor, jobless musician! Might still.....

Yeah, I'm in Burlington. I don't know about clubs, but I'm working on getting my 59 Apache ready for summer. If you're ever on this side of the lake and see a multi-color, primered Apache on the road, give a wave!
also, I re-read the ad, and realize it doesn't say it's a 235 or a 6, I am just assuming!

That's definitly a 235. It has the short cover on the side and the low water pump. There is also the motor mount bosses for '58 and later passenger application on the sides. I'd agree on passing on the engine-it's most likely seized, and you can get a better one. However, if you can get the whole truck cheap, it may be wort it if the bed and frame is good. You could part it out and sell it.
