We are glad you joined and if you go to a few of the different forums on engines or just truck talk, they will give you their opinion on what they think. Good luck and have fun! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Welcome to the Bolt Jonny5. YOur at the right place!! Hey, whats wrong with getting it running and drive it like it is while you decide just what it is that you want to do. You already have 12 volt and the engine compartment can handle about anything so now is time to think. I personally like a little more horse than the 6 cyl. but I can also see keeping a nice truck in original shape. Some pics may help out when you can post some and Joy gives some good advice about posting in the best forum for the most views and comments. Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 121 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 121 | Clean out the tank!! My 65 step had been stored for 22 years and while driveing it north (300 miles) it started running rough. Took the top off the carb and was amazed at the crap inside. I have since rebuilt the carb and will clean the tank out after I get it home. I plan on keeping the 6 in place adding split manifolds with dual exhaust and not sure where I will go with the carb. I like the look of dual carbs but hear a 4 barrel 390 cfm carb on Clifford manifold works really good.

After 7 years of storage, if you're not having problems yet, you will soon.
The tapping noise could be valve lifters. Give it an oil change, and it might come out of it after you run it a bit. Also, if there's varnish in that gas tank, running that into the engine can make all kinds of things stick! Don't ask me how I know that!! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 38 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 38 | JONNY5, Welcome, I am interested in seeing your progress as I have acquired a '65 myself with a 292 in it, 4 on the floor. These trucks are a lot of fun if you keep it that way. I used to have a '61 C20 when I joined this site, been deployed a lot (Navy) and learned a lot from the forums. The search option is very helpful and if I still can't find an answer, then I post my questions. Happy surfing and again...welcome. -Will Hammond
