Roy | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | Yes you can take the unit out of the tank on mine I had to set the hgt. of the unit in the tank so it was 3/8 of an inch higher than center and cut the arm so it was a little shorter that is what the instructions told me to do than I moved the arm up and down and looked at the gauge to make sure it was reading right.

Bill | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | If you shorten up the rod it will be able to move in the tank better in both directions so that it will read full and empty I shortened mine to 8 1/4 inches but the way you do that is take the sender out of the tank and as your watching the fuel gauge lift the float until the gauge reads full if the float is above the top of the sender you will have to shorten the rod so the float is just below the top of the sender as it would be in the tank when you have a full tank than it should also read empty when you lower the float to the same depth of the tank if your tank is 18 inchs deep than when your float is at 18 inchs it should read empty check both ways before cutting your float rod I had to adjust my sender so it was 3/8s of an inch higher than the center of the tank.Now my gauge reads full and empty so i don't have to quess.

Roy | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | No Tiny it will not make it read more fuller but the under frame tank I installed in My truck was only 8 1/2 inches deep so I had to shorten the float rod to give the rod more room to move up and down in the space I had,If the tank would have been 12 or 14 inches deep The rod would have been longer to read right so now it reads full when full and empty when empty.

Pete Yes it will. Think about it. If the rod is so long that it reaches the top of the tank before it reaches the top of it's travel. It won't read full. With the shorter rod it will reach the top of it's travel and show full. That is exactly what I had to do with my 38 to make it read correctly when I had a universal sending unit in it. I believe you said the same thing in your previous post.
