The problem is when I turned the ignition on and hit the starter button it would engage and turn slowly . I let off the starter button and it was still slowly turning over . Then I turned off the ignition and it still turned over slowly . I had to unhook the battery to stop it cranking . I was wondering, if the starter needs shimming ? If it was too tight would it keep the starter gear engaged and keep current flowing ? If everything's coming your way , your in the wrong lane... 1958 GMC Shorty | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | It sounds like it needs to be shimed a repair manual for that engine will spell out the best way to do it.

I grounded the body and flashed the positive to the "S" terminal & the heavier main terminal . The solenoid works but the starter doesn't crank . Any ideas ? it also has a "R" terminal but my truck only has a positive to the starter and one wire from solenoid to starter button . Now to deal with the shimming . Thanks for your reply Pete52 . If everything's coming your way , your in the wrong lane... 1958 GMC Shorty | | |
