The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Cowl Ventilator Bolt question

My 1949 GMC 3/4 ton was in pieces when I bought so did not see how many items were originally installed. The cowl ventilator is ready to install and I need to know how many bolts, how tight to install, etc. There are two slots on each bracket of the ventilator that match brackets under the dash. The holes are long so not sure if for adjustment or what. Do all four slots get bolts? The connection to the actual control arm is straight forward, but would like help on the bolts size, placement, etc. on the vent itself.

My 'mounting brackets' were actually the under dash hinges frozen into place. Once I freed them up, it was very apparent where all bolts went. Pretty embarassing, so guess I will get my shop light out sooner next time.

I'm not sure about your 49 but on my 37 and the 52 there are a couple of those bolts with what I call "shoulder bolts". They are the bolts that can only be tighten so tight... .and it still lets the cowl vent swivel. I took one of my old ones and had the machine shop make a couple sets of them. You may find some you need at an Ace Hardware store?? Hope this helps.


Just for guys who have wing vent assemblies
I might add that since I had such a terrible time with the rivets that hold the wing vent on my 52 to the vent assembly that I had the machine shop make me a couple sets of screws that were just like the rivets only threaded on the bottom. Then I used a small self locking nut. They look good and sure was easier than trying to bang that darn rivet with the sorry tool that comes with it.

Alvin, do you have any close up pictures of what you did to replace the rivet?

hookalatch, I don't have any handy but I can certainly take some and post them. Give me a day.
If all else fails I "might" be persuaded to part with the extra set I have!!....or I cn get the guy to make me a couple more sets. I think he charged me $10 to make them and another quarter each to get the little self locking nuts.

so are the 'mounting brackets' supposed to move? Are you sure? I took my vent off (it's '50 1/2 ton) to put the gasket on, and am trying to get the vent back into place but am having a rough time of it (it won't close all the way when I pull back on the under dash handle). But it sure looks like the holes that the vent bolts through connects to 'brackets' that don't move. I'll check again; anything's possible.

I used a repop rubber gasket on my 37 pickup and it never closed good. Seems its to THICK and won't let it come down like the old cork gaskets will...but I'm sure if you (and me) would let the vent lay "normally" we can figure out just how the bolts go. I did not have this problem on my 52.

Oops, I never tried to answer your question. On my 52 the two brackets on each side of it do not move. The bolts that go through it are souppose to let it swivel.

Thanks, Archipmunk. Yeah, I didn't think I was crazy. I'm sure mine don't move, and aren't supposed to.

The brackets do move, they get rusty and frozen up. Spray WD-40 on them and carefully work them lose.

This thread has me a bit cornfused but I think you all might be talking about this part????
