This 261 engine came to me with a canister oil filter with but not on the motor. It appears to have been on the motor before, but the lines it uses are just common fuel hose, clamped on to brass fittings. I had thought that all the 261 engines were high pressure oiling. Would this mean that it needs to have a high pressure type line, going to the block and filter unit. I've read the threads on moving some pin in on the motor for better oiling proposes, but am not sure how, why or if it needs to be done on this engine. Also since the unit wasnt on the motor, which fitting on the motor would be the inlet one for this filter. Both lines are the same length, so they could have gone either place. It seems intirely possible that something is screwy with this setup, but I have no other similar engine to compare it to.

The holes in the block for the oil line fittings in a 261 are generally 1/2" npt and the 235 holes are much smaller. I think 1/4". Just one way to tell.

Not all 261's are high pressure. My 56 is not. High Pressure did not come until 58.

the earlier ones did not have the bigger lines.....the hole toward the front of engine is line to filter,,the hole toward back is return from filter..don't think you have to worry about to much pressure but i'd get some good lines,,don't want an oil fire...

I believe all 261's are high pressure oilers. The early ones, 54-57 use a by pass filter system like the 235 and have the smaller lines. In 58 they went to full filtration and started using the 1/2" lines. Note, because of this you cannot just block off the '58-'62 261 oil lines like you could on the 235's. If you do, you might be out an engine.

It was actually '59 on the filter change. It's also more of a full flow filter, instaed of high pressure, all of the oil goes through the filter instead of bypassing like on the older blocks. The line size on the earlier blocks is 1/8" npt.
Any auto parts store that handles hydraulic hoses should be able to make new lines for you.
