For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 19 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 19 | Hey folks, Brand newbie here. I have a 61 Apache w/235 but it looks like the carb is from a newer model. All it says on it is Rochester Mono Jet by GM. Mine of course is a manual choke but this one looks like it had vaccuum lines (capped) and a solenoid (no wire) to control the choke. I would like to re-build the carb but I am not sure how to determine which carb it is. I can't find any numbers on it, what is the best way for me to proceed?
Thanks for any help! | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | mono jets were from later trucks. The original carb would have been a Rochester B model. I believe that you might still be able to purchase a rebuilt "B" from NAPA to this day. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=HOL647073_0180191135#Looks like about 200 bucks You might find them on eBay for less. Many people dislike the B due to warpage and thus difficulty in them remaining leak free. Rebuilding your monojet may just be a better way to go. Or you if you intend on adding a split manifold and other mods, maybe a 2 barrel carb might be something to consider. Something like a Rochester 2GC. You will need a different intake or use an adapter to your original intake. 2GC carb (good price and upgraded) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Roch...ck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item4cecd007102 bolt to 4 bolt adapter http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort Offy 5710 from Charlie Price's Vintage Speed site

You can ID the carb from that number & any parts store can get a kit from that number. It probably had a auto choke. You will have a problem getting it to work because the heat coil was in the manifold. The later models had electric chokes. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I don't like all that extra stuff a hangin' off there if I am not using it. Ok, I'll try to get some pics up over this weekend. She's a little rough looking but she sure is fun, oh... and my truck ain't bad either! | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 19 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 19 | Well... after researching a little more, I think I have found that this is not the original engine. The casting number on the engine is 3921968, which according to this site: http://www.inliners.org/casting/numbers.htmlWhich makes it either a 230 or a 250 and is from 64-76. How do I tell the difference? Does the Rochester Mono Jet belong to that engine? Sorry folks, this is all new to me so I do appreciate the help. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 240 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 240 | If it is truly a 230-250 they had to change the bellhousing, the 235 has a different bolt pattern. The later 6 has the same bolt pattern as the V/8. That is a benefit for you if you ever considered a V/8 upgrade.

It's all starting to come together now. I think it was originally a straight because it has a small brake pad, not the wide one like an automatic would have. So, I think it must be a new engine and transmission which would also explain the "newer" steering column and steering wheel as well as the newer carburator. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The Monojet came on 68 up 250's. If it matches the engine & manifold I would use it. They are a better carb then the model B when they work right. If the choke doesn't match up or parts are missing you might find one with a manual choke Or a late model with electric choke. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I will see if I can find one with a manual choke. | | |
