I found a 235 engine that does not run due to a carb rebuild needed. It has the manifold&generator. The seller asked me to make an offer. It looks clean. Any suggestions on what to offer.

$50 is where I would start if you cannot hear it run. Make sure the engine will turn & is not locked up. Be prepared to do an overhaul If it is not very good. If You want one ready to go pay a little more for one you can hear run or you know the person well. That's an old excuse, needs a carb or needs the timing set.

I sold a 54 235 (full oil pressure), complete to Jerry, HotRod Lincoln, for $100 with the understanding it turned over and ran in recent history but overall condition was unknown. BUT, I also threw in a running 250, complete, too. It's all about what both parties can agree on. Some people believe their stuff is made of gold and others sell cheap to put it to good use. Of course, everything in between too. Start low and haggle from there,

I bought one 235 online from a guy that said it had been overhauled sometime before he owned it. I said I would take it and drove 100 miles to get it. It had no intake/exhaust/carb. The gaskets were dried up, but the inside did look fairly clean. I was not happy, but I had said I would buy it before seeing it. I paid $200. Next one I saw and heard run (it smoked). It was complete including the belhousing/clutch/pressure plate. Paid $50.00. if the $200 turns out to be a good one and with the parts off of the other one, I will come out OK. But time will tell. Like has already been said, buy from someone you know or hear it run or take you chances. I have lucked out on some V8 deals and burned on some. I guess it balances out, but it can be frustrating.

I found a 54-55 261 in a old local junkyard it is just the longblock for $100 is it worth that?

I,m no expert, but didn't the 261 come out in the early 60's? 54-55 would be a 235? A 261 has the built in oil filter which is a good find, if it is from the 60's era.

THe 261 came out in about 54 in the larger trucks. The early ones did not have the full flow oil filter.

I don't want to steer away from the 235 question,but.

The 261 did come out in 1954.The 1954-1955 first series 261 didn't have full flow oil filter.The 261 was produced from 1954-1962 and the left over 1962 engines were installed in the 1963 4x4 trucks.

Smel,I gave $200 for my complete 1954 261 that had two pistons stuck.

Don't mean to brag but I bought a 54 6500 with a rebuilt 261 and a reconditioned carb in drivable condition for $500. The deals are out there, just have to wait for them,
