Hello everybody. I'm going to pick up an all original 48 'burb this weekend and I was looking for suggestions. My plan is to get her running and drive as is after I square away the brakes and all that. My question is that it has very weathered paint/with surface rust and I was looking for suggestions to keep her from rusting when I bring it back to Illinois. Thanks, Brian

....suggestion? Take LOTS of picture. LOTs and LOTS. I found out long time ago to take pics of everything. You simply cannot remember everything the way it fits or bolts up and you WILL forget. A picture reduces the headaches and stress 100 fold.

Yes, I am the crazy one that bought the one in Oklahoma on ebay. It's a heck of a lot more solid than the one I have and best of all, its an original owner vehicle that still has all of its original seats.

Word of caution when you first get this one home, wear a mask when cleaning the interior.

And spray the inside down with a good Germicidal Cleaner to kill all those nasty tiny bugs that can be left behind in Rodent Poop ....Joe

Yea, I'm excited but nervous to go get this one. I paid more than I should but I spoke with the seller a few times to really talk about this, then he told me it was his father in law who purchased it new. I asked him to post more photos but probably shouldn't have, then he dragged everyhting out.Hopefully I can get it running and then go from there.Leaving Sat 12am for the 13 1/2 hour one way trip.

That's perfectly Ok about downloading the photos, then I don't have to try to figure that all out.I'm hoping they have found all of dads paperwork, but I'll know Saturday afternoon. Any suggestions on what I could put on the truck so it won't rust anymore when it hits the Illinois humidity?

Brian, as far as rust prevention if it were me I would not worry about trying to prevent any further rust, I would however try to keep it indoors while you work on it and enjoy it.

If you never plan to repair/repaint the exterior then you could coat it with one of those rust prevention chemicals. But if your plans are to repair and repaint the exterior any time soon then I think you will be wasting your money on rust prevention materials.

The photos look great and it looks like a great score and good start for an authentic restoration.

I watched that burb until it sold.You got yourself a really nice project to work with.I wish i knew how it felt to own the rear two seats,LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, for my other burb I had bought a full set of seats , now I won't need them so ??????? I should sell them with the burb though.

I think the price is in-line with the condition. You'll save alot of money not haveing to hunt and buy missing parts. You'll also save money on body work. Maybe no one will agree with me but I would leave the cosmetics alone and as they are. Anyone can have a repainted sub, but the patina that that one has is priceless and has charactor. Look at some of the "rat" jobs out there these days, they're the hottest thing out there right now.

Brian....I see that seller also had another 'burb for sale.
It looks like he has 'converted' it to a clamshell model.
Spot the hinge holes in the rear corners. Or did they all come with them,with blanking plugs?

IMO your new purchase is a more honest original,and as Giladad mentions,take all the parts hunting costs in time and fuel into account and you've got your self a winner!

Just got back with the burb from OK,she's pretty solid with exception of what seller said about left rear cab corner. This truck is original and I was given the orig key that even has the code tab sill on it, owners manual that has all maint written down and all reg. paperwork since 1956. Original title has place for reg on it so I'm assuming that is why there is no 1948-1955 reg.It sure is nice to not to have to fix floors or kickboard area. Engine still has oil in it and I shot some lube down into the cyl , we'll see if she starts.Shes staying orig.

Congratulations! You didn't overpay. When you try and find all of these bits nad headaches that go along with it, to find a clean starter project like this, it's worth it. Take plenty of photos, I have been doing it too. Good luck!

Now trying to get the engine unstuck, so far unsuccessful. I have another dilema with the original title, Illinois is gonna want me to surrender it to get a title in my name. I tried to say it was misplaced and had bill of sale, power of attorney and all that good stuff and Secretary of State said no good. Any suggestions? I thought about Interanational Title service but by the time I'm done it'll be $300.

On my 41 chevy sedan i had the same thing. So i made a copy of it. In Illinois i think that is all you can do. It will tell the same thing as original but i know it not original. Good old state of Ill.

For future reference, I just went to SOS to get title paperwork and they said I can send a letter with my original title and I may get the origianl back as well as the new issued Illinois title in my name .....we'll see.

Brian, I used a company in Nevada for my 46 Burb. Cost was $150.00.

They sent me a new title that I then converted to a Florida title.

That way you could keep the old title.

If you want me to dig into it deeper and get you the name of the company let me know.

Only one in Nevada I can think of is International Title Service and he sells a bill of sale out of Maine and then I have to use that to get an Illinois title. On a 1950 Panel I have they said 225.00 I thought. I think Illinois is gonna send me back the original. Under the Welcome Center another guy from Illinois got his original title back but he hasn't replied to my message.
