How reliable are the original 3 spd (column shift) transmissions from the AD trucks? The couple I have pulled open show significant wear, especially on the shift forks.
Rebuilding my '50 1/2 ton has been slowed by the discovery of a decent size crack in the frame behind the front passenger cab mount. Need to start looking for a parts truck this summer.

I have had two 3 speed AD trannies in my trucks and they were both good. However one had a bad synchro ring and it made shifting up a bit noisy unless I double clutched. I think if the parts are good and you check and replace the bearings if necessary you should be okay. Parts are available. On the other hand depending on what you have and what you want to do with it, there are other manual transmission options.

You say tranny parts are available. Do you mean there is a soarce of new parts for these trannies? I have a 52, 1/2 t. I'd feel better if I knew I could fix the thing if something went.

Check with WDoftexas. Phone # 817-845-7751. I have emailed him when I was rebuilding my three speed and he has lots of new parts at better prices than the repops.

bob - there are several places that have rebuild kits for these trannys. one is northwesttransmissionparts.com. you will have to call them because their website for standard shift transmissions is not complete. somewhere on one of the links i found a place that had their price list available and if i remember right it was around 80-100 dollars for a complete rebuild kit. i will try to find that info and post.
