Hello fttp - I have a 1954 Chevy 210 - the engine is a 265 C.U. in line six cylinder - 3 on the tree -- Is the 261 Cylinder head the same as the 265 C.I. CYLINDER HEAD ?? Bob

The heads are a little different but they will interchange. The are some additional holes in the 261 head often referred to as "steam' holes but I don't know where that came from as there is no steam involved. However it is necessary to make sure the head gasket used also has these little gems or there will circulatory trouble ahead. Kind of like a blocked artery I suppose. I have not done this procedure but am told that the holes can be drilled in the 235 gasket. I think (w/o looking) there may be some additional info available in the archives so I'd suggest a thorough search as I always do. There has been a lot of discussion about using 261 heads. But WTH, "if" your needing a new engine why not try for a complete 261? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,763 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,763 | The "steam" holes are needed because the 261 cylinders are "siamesed", no coolant passages between them. The holes allow coolant to flow upwards past the joined cylinder walls instead of creating "steam pockets" caused by lack of coolant flow. If you run a 235 head on a 261, they need to be there. The 261 head can fit the 235 with no problems- - - -the holes don't have to be plugged. If you choose to use a 261 head gasket for a drill guide, be aware that the holes have to be drilled at a slight angle, not square with the head surface. I think there's a good tech tip somewhere that explains the procedure in detail.

So I'll tell the guy that yes he can use the head on a 235 (assuming that he has the original type motor and not a 265 V8), but why?, when he could use a 235 head which is to find.

Nobody is beating him up, and he did mean 265 because that's what the fellow who is interested in buying his head asked him about.
