First off let me congratulate you on a fanatastic website for sourcing information on these great old trucks.

I'v e just purchased a 51 chev 5 window shortbox, which has been sitting for 17 years under a tree, in Everett.

I've spent a few hours already sourcing engine serial numbers and casting numbers and am pretty sure that I have a 235 cast in 54 at the Flint plant. The title says rebuilt, but what that refers to I'm not sure.

the head number appears to be
CON13 - 3835913 - GM 14

there is another number
3833922 or 3836922 (numbers hard to read)
GM

the block number is 3875911

the engine serial is 0737235 F542 34

the door VIN number plate is missing but there is a painted cardboard(?) plate with 20JPF -thats's all- on it

on the carburetor there is no tag but the numbers B14 913 - 241 - 570

Rochester

"Pearl" (bombay Ivory701C) (as she is now named) is very straight, and I plan to use her as my daily driver.
I am located in Vancouver, BC, Canada and would appreciate any names of part suppliers close to me.
I have already made a list of what I need from the Carter website and American Classics.

This is my first truck resto, but I have completed a 63 falcon, 66 olds dynamic 88 and a 60 chev belair and have been puttering for the past year on a 61 jaguar MK-9.

I will post pictures and progress report as I go along, right now I'm in the -lancing the boil stage- and draining all the rancid fluids before I even attempt to turn the motor over.
Thanks for your help and look forward to sharing another stovebolt story with you all.

WELCOME Dave, happy to have you. We definately love pictures so be sure to keep everyone up to date as you go along.

The closest supplier to you for some things will probably be Cheviesofthe40's down in Vancouver,WA area. Mostly car parts but a lot of interchangable stuff too. Brothers Trucks in CA is good too. Again we are pleased your with us.

Thanks for the quick info, I've already fired off a fax to Chevies of the 40's for most of the gasket kits and brake parts, but still need to determine if this is a splash motor or a full flow.

From what I've read so far there is supposed to be a kidney shaped cover held on by 3 screws halfway back on the drivers side.
Not knowing exactly what I am looking for I would say I can't see it there. Does this make it a full flow?

I've determined that this truck was built in June in LA in 1951, from the information that I've dug up so far.

I'm thinking that the original owner either replaced or stepped up to the 235 in or around 54.

Hy deanomartini, the head number you gave is for a 54-55 235, I can't find the block number you gave us in my resources. good luck with your truck , keep us informed, and post pic's.

took another look at the posting and realize that I made a mistake the block number is 3835911 which is correct for a 54 I believe.

great contacts.
Thanks a lot, I'll get some pictures off real soon.
Pearl has minimum surface rust, the original bombay ivory paint and a clean straight body. The frame is solid with no rust through and the original bed is still all there. I couldn't believe that someone else didn't spot it on craigslist
Thanks again and I will check back in real soon

Your engine is a 235 full pressure oiling engine, based upon the serial number. It was built in Flint in 1954, and should be 115 HP. It was a plain old vanilla engine with the standard options (i.e. no heavy-duty clutch, no power steering, no power brakes, no aluminum cam gear, not a corvette engine, et cetera).

There is a date code. Look behind the starter. My date code is K 10 0. The letter is the month. "A" is January. 10 is date and year is 0 = 1960.

The engine is indeed a '54. Your head and block casting numbers are the same as on the '54 truck engine in my '53 6400. If the character after the 54 (which denotes the model year) in the serial number is really a Z instead of a 2, as in F54Z, this engine was originally a regular production passenger car engine. It is full pressure oil, but likely not full flow (referring to the oil filter, if equipped), unless it has been modified.

They used the "Z" engines in the smaller trucks, too. (3100/3600)

My references, which include the '54 resto packs, don't show Z for the trucks. They show X (3100), XA (3600), and XB (3800) as the only suffixes for the regular production 235 truck engine. Mine's an X.
