What did I do? I purchased a 1952 3100 in pieces. The engine has a casting number of 3692703 and a serial number JAD766756. The head has a casting number of 3835499.
The websites that I checked show that I have a block for a 235 passenger vehicle with powerglide and the head is from a 1950 216. It was together when I bought it but it was not running due to a broken valve seat. The head is machined and the Valves ground (intake measures 1.92").
I purchased a valve grind gasket set from Jim Carter that doesn't fit and baffels them. Anybody know what I have and will it work? It seems to match and the old head gasket seems to have worked. I sent it to them to match but they claim I have a 1954 235. I couldn' t be that lucky.

The JA part of the code pegs it as a '51 engine, the "D" part isn't listed in my books, most likely, with the casting number coming up as a 235, it's out of a '51 Powerglide car.

You have the same setup as I have. I don't know about your block number but the head was used on 216s and possibly 235s. You must have the short side cover, correct? They made 216s and 235s in 1950 to 52 that had the short side cover but were still low pressure motors. I originally had a head with a Canadian casting number but it had a crack. I now have the same head as you and they are identical. The gasket set you need is for a 1950 to 52 Powerglide.

I found my earlier post on this subject:

For JC, I think the part number for the head set is ME211C2 for the 1950 to 1952, 235. The 235 and 216 use the same gasket set.

ME211c2 seems to match up to the gasket that I sent them. Thanks for all the info.

I just found something interesting in the Truck Cumulative Index for service literature for 1951:

"216 engine to use the 235 cylinder block and cylinder head castings"

Maybe this explains some of the mystery. This was the era when they made 216s with the short side cover. The cylinder head was different from the previous version and different again from the 1953 version.

The MPC is listing
all 216's with the large side cover &
all 235's with small side cover.
Sometimes catalogs are in error, so maybe someone will chime in and verify if the catalog is correct.

It can't be correct for both high side cover and short side cover because the block and head design are different.
