I have a '65 C-10 I just bought. It has the old 4- speed transmission(granny gear). My question.... I would like to put a three speed std. tranny in it. Is it just a matter of unbolting the old and putting in the other? 230 inline... Thanks

You'll need to have a driveshaft made. The yoke on the granny 4-spd is fixed on the trans, it doesn't slide in like the 3-speed. The driveshaft on the 4spd granny has a slip joint built into it.

The transmissions are different lengths, so different drive shafts. There is an exception, there was a heavy duty 3spd option. I've only seen one and that was in a 60 panel I had 30 years ago.

You will also need to shift it. A 3spd shifter on the floor, or find a donor and pull the column,all the linkage, and drive shaft. That's assuming you have the 4spd column now.

There are other problems depending on what year 3spd.

What Brad and Larry said - bolt it in and you'll need a longer driveshaft. Nothing inside the bellhousing needs to change.

There may have been more than one type granny 4 speed as mine had a conventional slip yoke on the driveshaft and standard spline and seal on the back of the transmission. It's an easy matter to slide under and see which you have.
