The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts VIN ISSUE?

Well I have had this truck some time now and close to driving it daily eventhough planning other changes in the future.I purchased this as a 46 1.5ton but my vin plate is almost impossible to read. Faintly it shows load master, at the bottom center is stamped "90S04" bottom right 9159, nothing else is visable. vin buster didnt work and also tried the rest of our options on this forum and lots of web sites with vin id failed. Any other info will help?

I had similar problems with my serial number, ( thinking it was vin buster)
But I was wrong, my serial number and title had an O in place of an “Q”
So, I tried your serial number with a “Q” (wrong result below), then I tried a
Capital O, and got the last results below… I’m betn that’s your truck, but check your wheel base .

Serial # : 9QS049159 (wrong)
Mfg Year : 1947
Model : 2 ton COE
Wheelbase : 158 inches
Plant : Norwood, OH

Or

Serial # : 9OS049159 (my bet correct)
Mfg Year : 1946 (interim)
Model : 1.5 ton
Wheelbase : 160 inches
Plant : Norwood, OH

My Mass. title had the "wrong" letter (O) not the (Q) on it
Knowing how inconsistant / screwed up the Reg of Motor V (RMV)
is, I made a decission to NOT fix either the title or the door
post plate.... whay too much aggravation and added expense. I
plan on keeping my truck for ever.... your mileage and experiance my vary...:>)

I have a set of number and letter stamps. Changing an ID tag is lots easier than changing a title.

Where did you get stamps that look like the original numbers?

A guy I talked to some months ago had looked all over creation and had not found the right ones anywhere.

I actually bought them with a bunch of other stuff when the GMC house sold out back in the 60's. Back in those days the GMC house installed a lot of short blocks and stamped the rest of the numbers on the distributor boss because thats how the vehicles were titled in Texas in the early 50's. The wooden boxes don't say GMC, but they stamp narrower than the Chinese numbers you get now. I even have one more blank ID tag that came with the stuff. I bought a repop on eBay recently, but it is noticeably different than the real one. I think probably any numbering set that is 50 years old would look more like the original.

Sounds like you found the right solution but its not one easy for others...

I am prety sure in my state (mass), when you alter / tamper with the serial numbers / VINs, you are breaking the law. they ( VIN/ serial # ) can only be authorized or modified by the Registry of motor veh..

like I said in my last post... I'm just going to leave my original wrong numbers as is ( cuz they both match ) Your states
may be different. I'd suggest that you investigate more before you alter the serial tags...

It is probably a felony in every state. It certainly is in the State of Washington.

I watch these threads with some fascination in part because people are announcing publically that they intend to break the law.

I am actually a licensed salvage dealer in Texas. They are very particular about late model stuff and everything has to be documented. They don't really about vintage stuff unless they have reason to believe that something is stolen. Everyone of my over the road trucks was reconstructed from salvage. I have documented where the components came from. Late model trucks have the vin stamped on the frame as well the door jamb. Quite often the cab and frame were not born together. Prosecution must prove fraudulent intent. This is a difficult task for the prosecution if there was no fraud involved.

Call me chicken but up here in Michigan I wouldnt take the chance and there pretty strict. Thanks again loadmaster47, my problem was resolved in the first replies you gave.

you can fix the photobucket link in your signature line by removing the space between the = and the http.

Go to:

My Stuff >> Edit Profile

At he bottom of the page, in the box where you type your signature in, place a cursor just before the http and backspace once, then click <SUBMIT>

It should work then.
