I have a "blazer" tank that was to go in my
1970 C-10 which I no longer have. Just wondering how close they are in shape.
I'm just not feeling up to crawling under
the Jimmy while its parked on gravel.

.... and I believe JimCarter is the only one that is doing a re-pop on the panel/surburban tanks at this time and they just got the prototype about 6 months ago. Wish I had one of them.

JCs panel body gas tank is for 47-53 trucks. But, I think they could be used on a 54/55-1st panel-body truck by blocking off the hole in the side of the tank (the hole the for fuel supply ?).

Tim,jim carter has the tank for 1947-1948 truck and 1947-1955.1 suburbans.I looked at the one in the picture at the KC show . They looked like a heavy guage metal, and the brackets looked really nice. They just got these in not long ago.

Tim,

The 54/55 panel-body tank is different from the earlier Advance-Design panel tank. Also, the 54/55-1st mounting straps are different from the 47-53 mounting brackets. I spoke with Mike about this when JC was having the tanks made, and I spoke with Mike about this yesterday.

As I posted above, I think the 47-53 tank can work in a 54/55-1st panel-body truck (using the different/new 54/55-1st combined ("integral") fuel-gauge-sender/fuel-feed-line. I did not mention that the mounting hardware also differs - the earlier brackets will not work on the 54/55-1st panel body trucks.

Here is a photo of the tank and mounting pieces in a 54/55-1st panel-body truck and a discussion of the differences compared to earlier fuel tanks:

They are definitely different mountimg straps.I think you meant to say they were for 1947-1953 panel and suburban, not trucks.
Thanks tim.

Tim,
No, I was poorly referring to the 47-53 trucks (that used the under-body fuel tank - as you clarified). headscratch

Sorry.

Did the trucks have the tank in 1947 and 1948 or just 1947 on the frame ?

tclederman, if that tank is mounted in a panel it is of the one ton configuration. That is a larger tank and it is different than the 1/2 ton models. The 47/8 truck tank has slight differences and the fill tube is shorter and at a different angle than the panel/suburban. The gauge sending unit is mounted in the center top. I think the 1/2 ton tanks are around 13 gallons and the 1 ton tanks are about 18 gallons.

JC has the exclusive rights on the tanks, he was the one who had them made. I recently had an opportunity to see several tanks side by side and noted the differences, I wish I took pictures.

George,

The panel body fuel tanks from 47-55 were 16 gal for 1/2 ton and 18 gal for 1 ton.

The 1947 1/2 ton pickup tank held 17.5 gallons.

I do not have dimensions for the 3800 frame, so I would not venture a guess whether the picture I posted above is for a 1/2 ton or a 1 ton. There is an extra cross member in the 1 ton and the overall frame length is 40" longer than the 1/2 ton.

JC sells a different tank for 47-48 1/2 ton pickup vs 47-55 (really 47-53) 1/2 ton panel body. He lists his mounting straps for 1/2 ton panel body tanks as being for 47-55 also (most likely the 47-53 "straps" are different from the 54/55 straps)?

When you state that the gauge sending unit is mounted in the center top, are you referring to the 47-53 1/2 ton panel tank and/or the 47-48 1/2 pickup tank?

Thanks,
Tim

Tim, I have had both the 1947/8 pickup tank and the 1947/53 Suburban tank side by side and I saw no difference in size. There are small differences in design, but nothing that would prevent you from interchanging the tanks. As I said before, the major difference is the filler tube that is connected to the tank. I am trying to remember if both tanks had the sending unit in the center, I believe they did. Maybe Marty can add some information. I saw approximately 15 tanks, including the one ton panel, 1/2 ton panel/suburban and the 1947/48 pickup.

Not to muddy the waters but during a conversation with a vendor
He said get your dimensions and you can get a poly tank for about 250.00 . He did mention heating and turning fill tube to work. Anyhow something else to think about.

I just shot a few photos of my original tank back in my 49 suburban. I think as Tim noted, they are pretty much the same as a Panel. Scroll to the bottom.

Are they still 259.00 or did they up the price? I thought they had some listed on ebay in the $300 up range?

...if I remember correctly they are $379. Mike had told me he had finally talked Jim into doing it and I was anxious to see/get one. Mike had sent me a picture of the tank and I like it....I wanted one and figured they would go for about 250-279. As it turns out I'm gonna clean and line the one I have.(used tank I got from Mike) I can't stand #379 for the tank. IF that is the actual price I think its a bit high. I'd have to have a local shop make me one rather than pay that....
I wonder if Jim got that one made in USA or overseas???...Mike?

... I just clicked on his online catalog and it came up $350 and as you mentioned with the discount it would be $315....plus shipping.

A "NON" stovebolter ask me the other day why JCarter took off his 5% online discount off. I told him so he would join the Stovebolt group and get 10% smile
