For example there are big differences between a NP54o and a NP542. Next you must know your requirements, i.e., what do you wish to operate with a PTO? Rotation needed? Which side of the tranny? Remote ot direct mount pump? Shaft size? Control type? Speed required?
See what I mean? It is simply not enough to say "I think it is a 540" and ask for a PTO. There are a lot of things to consider. If you'll give me the answers to these things I'll be able to help you or anyone at a power drive dealer will be able to also.
If you cannot find a model number on your transmission then remove the PTO cover plate where you want to put it and count the number of teeth on the PTO drive gear, whether it's in front of or behind the ctr line, LH or RH pitch or spur gear. Then we start our detective work.

The transmission has the following casting #s C-91171 and the NP for New Process. There is no other identification on the case. There are 15 teeth on the transmission grear for the PTO. The gear is straight cut. I will use the PTO for a dump bed on my 1.5 ton '54 Chevy. Thank you for your help Roger

Current catalogs don't have all the older transmissions listed so this a problem but I'll keep looking if you'll supply the rest of the needed info.
Spicer brand tranny isn't listed at all in current Chelsea catalog. No 5831 in Muncie catalog. Using an auxillary transmission probably isn't the best choice anyway as the main would have to be engaged in order for it to run PTO. Question: why would a 1.5 ton have an auxillary transmission? Most old Chev. had 4 speed SM420 GM trannys.

In order to get a lettle more speed I plan to install a 261 with a 5831A spicer auxiliary trans (27% over drive). I also have a new process 5 speed which gives me a better gear range. The sm420 has to large a gap between 3rd and 4th gear. I currently have a PTO on the sm420 which runs the lift bed (this was a grain truck). With the new process 5 speed I would need a PTO on the driver side. I understand that to run a PTO off the auxiliary trans I would need to have the transmission in direct drive 1:1 or 5th gear. Since I didn't know what might be available in PTOs I thought I would check both the spicer and the new process. I am open to suggestions. Thank you for your efforts, Roger Pell

On the LH side a single gear PTO will require a vertical offset adaptor gear, 093. spacer and stud kit. The adaptor may cost more than a PTO. Also you must consider what rotattion you will need. Single gear units rotate crnk but if you need opposite crnk rotation then you must go to a double gear PTO that cost a lot more and you still require the adaptor, spacer and stud kit. All of them run fairly slow, SG is only 25% od engine speed. Too slow really for a hydraulic pump which likes about 60-70% of engine speed. Also this outfit requires 10 inches of free space to the frame flange so it's a large and heavy unit.
Unfortunately I am unable to find out anything on the Spicer 5831 unit. It's too old so you'll need to go to a good PTO drive dealer like Fleet in CA and hope they have some old books. Got rid of all my old stuff a long time ago. Sorry I am unable to be of more assisitance to you. Good Luck.
