Can somebody tell me what the significance of the blue dot is? Does it have a purpose or is it just to identify repop lenses?

Illegal in a lot of areas. Check your state statutes. A lot depends on how anal the LEOs are in your area. I ran a blue dot on my bike for years and never had a problem even though they are illegal in Kansas.

Watch it with those blue dots on an AD tail light. They pretty much block out all the light when viewed from the back in the daytime and someone following you won't see even a glimmer of red light when you step on the brake.

thanks for the warning Denny, maybe I'll stick with my 50 Buick taillights frenched into the fenders.

I'm putting glass blue dot tail lights on my '46 truck now as its being rewired. I know they're illegal in California but I think they're cool and frankly I don't intend to drive it that much at night. I suppsoe that makes it worse. They're probably easier to seeat night. They appear purple on those small lenses.

I got them on my 51 But there also illegal here in Vegas. Ive not had any problems so far the most I get from the cops around here is a thumbs up BUT I do carry a extra set of legal lens in my glove box "just in case"

Just a thing from the 40s and 50s,they were cool looking then and they still are to a lot of people.I have them on my 55,and I like them.Brings back memories from the 50s.

Like a lot of States,they're illegal over here too.
I followed my buddy back from a show a few years back(he had blue dot '50 Pontiac lights) on his '52 AD.
We got caught in heavy rain on the way home and I have to admit,it was tricky to tell when he was braking.
I have to admit they do look cool though!

I suppose it would be an idea to fit a 'discrete' 3rd brake light as extra insurance.

Have you already put the 50 Buick lights on the fenders? I would love to see how that worked out. I played around with some 49' Studebaker lights that I am thinking about still. Studebaker lights on 52'

I haven't yet, looks like the stake pocket is going to obstruct the view on the Stud lights. I may have the same problem with the Buick lights.

I just got some blue-dot inserts for my '53 big bolt,but I have plenty of rear lighting to makeup for the loss.I just need to figure out what size hole to drill.

The heck with the blue lights ! You wasnt kidding Denny they block out ALL the light when viewed from the back in the daytime. I just installed a set of LED lights in the stock taillight housings and they really make a differance

I was watching this post and biting my tongue (finger?) I agree that blue dots are VERY cool looking, but with my small tail lights, and the limited visibility/potential for disaster, I won't install bluedots. I swapped out my incandescent for LEDs.

Cool factor aside, be cautious with those bluedots. There is a reason why some states made them illegal. Do a before/after comparison and make sure you're willing to trade looks for safety. I don't believe in this case you can have both.

Are the LEDs good for 6v or only for 12V?

I was told here in Calif. only emergency vehicles are allowed to have any kind of blue lights or apart of facing forward or to the back of the vehicle. I would guess the same applies in all the other states too.

Not trying to hijack a thread here, but I bought mine at the FLAPS as a direct replacement for the 1157s. (My truck is 12v.) I'm sure there are 6v out there, but probably not at the FLAPS.

Here's a place that sells direct replacement 6v "bulbs".
