I picked up an automatic choke carb at a swap meet . I rebuilt it and put it on my 55, 235. It is working well except for the choke, does anyone know where the heater tube is supposed to run to ? I am not above reinventing something but I do want to keep this carb. THanks!!

The auto choke carb came out on the cars, trucks had a manual choke. The car used a formed sheet metal plate located on the top of the exhaust manifold with a hole in it for the tube. Locating one is another story.

There is a universal choke stove available. You can make one by wrapping some copper tube around a runner on the exhaust manifold. Connect the tube to the fitting by the choke coil. The other end of the tube can be connected by a rubber tube to the tube on the neck of the carb, or it can point down & draw air from under the manifold.

does the heated air come from exhaust air or air heated from outside the exhaust manifold ? I am thinking I can just make a little metal box with a screen that mounts to the exhaust manifold , then runs to the choke intake. Wadauya think?

Thated work. The air needs to come from outside the manifold & be heated by the heat from the manifold.

The carburetor on 235 truck engines on Hydra-Matic-equipped trucks came with an automatic choke, using the tube and manifold stove as was used on car 235 engines.

In this photo, you can see the tube and almost see the stove.

As Wrenchbender Ret. confirmed, the tube goes into a hole in the stove and is warmed by the heat coming from the manifold - from the warmed air and by contact with the warmed/hot stove.

thanks guys, I now have the confidence to go make something that should work, however ugly it may be! do you have any idea what they used to keep from sucking junk into the carb, It must have some kind of screen or filter ?

Nothing gets "sucked" into the carb. As I recall the tube transfers heat to a spring inside the choke unit. The spring expands when heated, turning the choke "flapper" (valve) inside the carburetor.
