Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 | I'm looking for some pics of where the chevy truck hurst competition plus 4 speed shifter pokes through the floor or if there is one that is better for the 63-66 trucks. Thanks, Justin | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | You have installed a passenger car 4spd in your truck? Which one?
Most of of the 4spds mount the shift on the tail shaft. On my 63 C20 the A883 shifter comes up on the left side of the hump about 6 inches in front of the seat. The shifter mounts just behind trans case on the tail shaft.

I'd like to see some pics of where the hurst shifter comes up. I was thinking of modifying a camaro shifter i have but want to see how the hurst truck one fits before i get too carried away. I may be better off with the hurst.

It looks like it probably end up under the leading edge of the seat. You could make a 'Z' bracket to move the Camaro shifter forward. I've read of that being done.

I also have a BW Super T10. The first pic is what it looked like with the standard Competition Plus 4 speed shifter. I actually had 3 bucket seats at the time, which were somewhat shorter front to back than the stock bench seat. In 4th gear the handle almost touched the seat. In order to fit this shifter in front of the stock bench seat I think you're going to need to use the Hurst 55 Chevy bench seat shifter with the C shaped handle. The shifter is below the floor and the handle will easily clear the seat, unless your engine is much further forward than mine. I'm pretty sure any of the bolt on handles with interfere with the seat. The second pic is how it looks now, after I switched from the Competition Plus to the Street Supershifter mounting. It's the same exact shifter, but mounted further back and higher up so the shift rods run straight back and forth. My son machined the custom handle to fit my hand better than the Hurst offerings. The shifter itself is actually in the truck, the top of the boot is resting on the shifter head. A bench seat won't fit. The shifter is too far back and too high to clear a seat. The last 2 pics show the different shifter positions and shape of the rods. The difference between the two shifters is dramatic. The Supershifter is like a "power" shifter, extremely easy to use and shorter throws. I prefer the bench seat, and thought about going back to a 55 Chevy shifter and the lower mount just to be able to use the bench seat, but I have chronic back problems so for me the bucket seats are a must. If you have the low hump floor, the fit will be somewhat different. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | Markeb, Good stuff! When I was looking for a shifter my tranny, I didn't jump for a Hurst, because I didn't have any info. You've covered all that I want. Thank you
btw I like the diamond tuck. My Fav for custom upholstery.

One last thought on the Hurst shifter, for anyone wanting the pickup truck shifter, it might be good to consider one of the passenger car shifters instead. The shift mechanism and rods are the same per transmission type, but the handle changes for each application. As shown in the 1st picture above, the stick that comes with the truck application shifter is ridiculously long (in my opinion). I believe it is part number 5384331, 16.5" long, and with the shifter head mounted under the floor the knob is at dashboard height. There are passenger car applications that come with handles 5386900 (13.5" tall) or 5387236 11.12" tall). They all have the same shape, but I much preferred the 5386900 height. I've attached another picture to show the difference. The shorter height can be seen by how close the Hurst name stamped in the stick is closer to the boot. You can see the various sticks mentioned at the 2nd link to Summitracing. The new site under B&M stinks by comparison. There may be more info available if a person is interested enough. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 | A lot of good information here. Don't know if this will help any but I will throw it out there. My truck has a M-21 Muncie and a bench seat. I modified a Hurst Indy Shifter to clear the bench seat. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2625896630103882008DsyGRLOn my truck, just as LGriffin stated, the shifter comes through the floor right about at the leading edge of the front bench seat. The shifter on my truck has a very worn out mechanism. I replaced all the bushings in the shifter arms but it is still very worn. I checked with Hurst and they wanted almost as much to rebuild it as a new shifter costs (it is "factory" Hurst shifter from '65 (bayonet mounted stick). I therefore have bought a Hurst P/N 391 3780 Competition Plus Shifter which is made for a '57 Chevy full size car, haven't installed it yet though. Note that the handle on this shifter (39103780) isn't removable, it's welded. Hurst says this is because of the loading that results from the drastic c-shape that is required. Here are the spec's on the new shifter: http://www.jegs.com/i/Hurst/530/391-3780/10002/-1#John

I'm also forced to use the factory shifter for my New Process/833 o.d. trans, so it wasn't an option. But I've had other shifters rebuilt by them, and was happy.
For anyone with the high-hump floor pan, if you want to make the swap to the low-hump pan, be warned that it isn't a direct bolt-in. The flange/mounting area at the bottom of the firewall is different. The firewall is the same, the trans tunnel mounting flange is a panel that's spot-welded on, and is different between the tall and low humps.

I have a low hump truck. The 57 shifter might be the way for me to go. The hump on a low hump truck pops up a few inches right at the front edge of the seat. I want to keep the shifter out of this area because i think it might be difficult to get a shifter boot on.You guys have some awesome lookin trucks. Justin I haven't installed it yet, so I will have to honestly say I don't know for sure. I will post some photos though once I get around to it this fall. If you have viewed my photo link you know I ain't scarred when it comes to modifying stuff. Part of the shifter install is adding a 4-speed floor hump patch that is made for a '70 Camaro. I'll make it fit.. just need a bigger hammer. John
