Well 64Fleetside's 230 has a fresh coat of paint and I'm just about ready to pull my "tired" original 230. Since the motor is coming out I figured that this would be a good time to rebuild the T-5 tranny. Anybody got any experiences they want to share...good or bad...wrt rebuilding a T-5? Anything special I should look out for?

The main problem I see with T5 transmissions is the front bearing and retainer setup. For some reason the bearing race is not a press fit in the retainer so it tends to rotate. The problem with this rotation is there is a shim in front of the race that sets the preload on the front and rear bearings that becomes worn. This allows every thing to jump around and leads to problems.

On every T5 I put in I pull the race out and flip the shim over so the race is hitting on a unused part of the shim, then I locktite the race in.

Texmo,

Here is a link to my t-5 page. There are a couple good resources for t-5 info on this site, inliners international and chevytrucks.org.

Good luck,

Bill...thanks for the info...I had actually found your site when I was planning my T-5 change over last year and found it very informative. I "think" I know what I'm doing at this point, but I've never had a T-5 apart so I'm sure there will be lessons learned...hence this post...to try and keep the lesson learning (the expensive kind) to a minimum.

Texmo,

It surprises me how many people find that page. It gets about 70 - 80 hits a week. Glad it is helpful to some. The info is getting a little old.

Good luck with the rebuild,
