For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 35 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 35 | I just bought an old 1940 Chevy 1/2 ton truck in pretty good shape. Problem. The steering wheel is jammed and will not move. Noticed the steering box has a drain plug and I expect it 1) has no oil; 2) water got it and possibly rusted it a bit; and/or 3) something else is tied up in the mechanism inisde. Any thoughts? And, what kind of oil should I use if it is dry? Thanks all! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 | I’m sure you will get several different answers about the lubricant. For everyday use I use the same lube as the differential. If you are just trying to free it a light weight oil maybe mixed with a little kerosene. Are you sure the problem is in the steering box and not farther down the line like the tie rod and drag link joints or even the king pins. If you are not sure I would pull the pitman arm off of the steering box and check both directions from there. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,233 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,233 | If its locked up, I would pull it out for a rebuild. Most likely the lower bearing on the worm gear is rusted to the housing or to the worm shaft itself, in which case you need to start shopping. With out grease or oil, the lower bearings are the first to go. There is no drain hole for water to get out, and no seal on the input shaft to keep water from getting in. It could be as simple as the upper column bearing is stuck, but to be safe, pull it out for a look. ( http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/1929_54chevyparts/06/396.HTM ) Joe
