Engine specs:
-383 Stroker (9.5:1)
-462 Camel heads
-Erson Cam 472 lift/306 dur.
-TH350 tranny
Please Advise.....

I'm ill-equipped to diagnose your engine, as I'm an older truck guy, but . . . I'll throw out these ideas anyway -
- Obvious first question: Are all your cables clean & tight?
- Are you confident your battery is up to snuff? Maybe check the voltage drop at the battery when you try to start it.
- If you pulled the plugs out (removed the compression) and tried to start it, would it spin over well? If not, I would think it would point to something being over-tight, like a main bearing or something, or maybe the clutch is hanging up? . . .
- Of course, I guess the timing could be coincidental, and your starter chose NOW to start dying . . .

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,216 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,216 | If this is a start up of a new engine, STOP NOW!!! Do not keep slowly turning over the engine. You need this to start before all the break in lube is worn off the camshaft.
You are running plenty of break in lube , right? GM EOS, at least one bottle, and plenty of camshaft lube...
Replace the battery and cables, check all wires and circuits, and double check the firing order and timing. Double up on batteries if you have to to get this thing spinning. If it were mine, I would pull the distributor and re-prime the oil system if its been any length of time since the first priming. And if I had to crank more them four or five revolutions, I would add more EOS to the oil. Cam lube comes off pretty quick, so oil pressure is a must!
New engines MUST FIRE RIGHT OFF, read up on break in procedures before going on. You can loose the camshaft before you know it.

Any turning torque over about 100 ft/lb with the plugs out indicates something inside is too tight: rod bearings, main bearings, piston/ring fit etc. If it turns over OK by hand, find the starter or battery/cable problem. Ditto on making it start immediately- - - -you can scuff a new cam by extended cranking. Once it starts, go to 2,000 RPM for 20 minutes before doing much idling.
