So I've been keeping my eye's open for a deal on a Big Boom truck for a while. Looked at several oil field boomers that were too far away, and some junkyard boomers that were way too big to haul. A few weeks ago a guy I knew gives me a call and asks if I'd go with him to look at a couple big trucks, a 2 ton flatbed he's interested in and a "Tow" truck he thought I'd like. We get there and it's not a tow truck but this old Junk yard boomer. After talking to the owner for 1/2 hour we made a deal on both. In the end it worked out that my buddies towing truck had some mechanical issues so I ended up working the deal in exchange for me towing his to his place and storage of one of his 1/2 Tons at my lot for 4 months.

The story goes the owner bought this truck from a junkyard that went away up in Leavenworth, KS called Cristie's some of you might know it. He said it looked just like this when he bought it with the exception that the single duals were on the inside at the time, he moved them out for more stability. He used it at his farm to set some posts for a pole barn and other projects and doesn't need it anymore. Originally he wasn't going to include the winch but I convinced him that it would be too hard to remove/use for the project he was talking about.
He was using it regularly on the farm til a guy that was hauling off some scrap for him stole the radiator earlier this spring.
I found it interesting that it has a later 235 with a Big coil in cap HEI, and the lines where the external oil filter would be have a looped piece of braided hose with AN fittings. Soon as I get a chance I'm going to stick a radiator in it and see how she runs. He said the whole time he had it he ran it off a battery setting in the passenger side with a boat tank there too. I find the Car tank hanging from chain on the boom pretty funny.
The front fenders and bumper were trimmed off so it would better fit down the rows of the junkyard. The cab is toast.

By the way thats probably the best looking truck on the Bolt next to Sam and Ralph.

Look at the size of those oil line fittings- - - - - -it's possible you've got a 261 there.

And if you don't have a full flow engine, or one someone converted to full flow, then that line is probably extra and may actually hurt oil pressure.

If it is a full flow engine might want to use an oil filter.

If it is only replacing a bypass type filter then you'd be better off with it plugged.. If it only dumps good oil pressure back to the pan then do away with it, or install a bypass filter which will have the proper restriction and not waste to much good oil pressure..

I Think I can see the 2 raised bars on the block, which should make it a 261.

Yeah, sorry guys it is a 261, I looked at it the other night. Can't believe I didn't notice the captains bars. I was more fixated with what was out back, I wasn't looking terribly close up front. That motor will likely be coming out in the future and replace with a good running 235. For the very little road time this truck will see I don't see the point in leaving the 261 there.

Great find. I know you'll find many uses for it. My yard dog is the workingest tool I have.

Reminds me of when I first started rebuilding GMC's over 50 years ago. Thats all they had in those days and Cletis is right. They do work.

Way to save a old junk yard dog! Thats a big load for that half ton.

This is going back over 20 years, but I've rebuilt a few of those winches (company I worked for went bankrupt back in 1986). I used to build and install oilfield decks, live rolls, do frame stretches, install pumps, blowers, PTO's, winches, cranes, etc., ets., etc....

Is there a small plate on top of the gear housing that you show in pic #5? If so, it should give you a model number. Off-hand, it looks to be around a 12 to 20 ton high-mount winch you have there.

It's been a number of years, but PM me any questions you may have and I'll see if I can sweep some of the cobwebs from my rusty brain and try to help you out.

Looking into it a little more, I believe you may have an earlier model of this winch (or one of similar capacity).

If you can, measure the main shaft diameter, drum diameter, drum length and input shaft diameter and compare them to the winches on the above site. You should be able to narrow down which winch you have.

You may want to get in touch with Tulsa Winches as they should be able to get you information about your winch. They probably still have some replacement parts in stock, or can get them for you should you need them.

In case you didn't know, the main gear inside the side case is made of a bronze alloy. You may want to take the top of the gear case off to check for wear. The side plug is the oil level plug. It only needs oil in it to that height. There are roller bearings on either side of the input shaft while the winch shaft rides on bronze bushings.

Llano Co.> Yeah, the Silverado has 10k overloads on it and the trailer had dual brakes. I've hauled a lot of heavy loads with her, just take it slow and easy. I expect a transmission to be in my future. The extra long trailer was great for hauling the beast but the boom sticking out made it feel "different" but not scary.
