Two years ago, I bought a '49 half-ton that had been sitting in a barn for who knows how long. That much was evident by the mass of mouse droppings in the cab and by the green goo in the fuel tank. Although I had owned a truck like this years ago, as I began to take Ol Blue apart and put her back together again, I returned time and again to this forum for advice and tips.
This past weekend, she was finally back together enough for me to start her up and take her for a test drive. She did amazingly well except for the engine overheating. After checking the forum once again and drilling a 1/8" hole in the thermostat to bleed the air out of the cooling system, the problem was solved.

It is great to see a post like this to encourage those of us just starting down the path. I think I am about 2 years behind you but as slow as it is going it may be longer. I had read the tip about drilling the thermostat but had kind of forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me about that too.

Congratulation! I echo your sentiment. In 3.5 years of working on my truck I really feel I only did half the work. The other half was borne on the shoulders of the stovebolt brother(and sister)hood.
I could never have done this without there advice and encouragement.
