I just found this site, joined and am overwelmed with all the topics, information, etc. I am brand new to forums and posting so don't expect me to know what I am doing. I clicked "start here" to let people know who I am and what I've got, so here goes. I typed in George C as my user name because that's my name. I also go by the name of Motthollow. I have no idea which one will be listed on this website. I am a retired shop teacher and have a decent knowledge and experience in welding and machine work. Why did I join Stovebolt? I've had an almost stock '42 GMC half ton for over 10 years. A few years ago I got my usual case of "the sweats" when I'm in traffic with the stock steering, brakes, and suspension, so one day I pulled it in my garage and ripped the engine out along with the front sheet metal and suspension, with the intent of doing a resto-mod using IFS, rack and pinion steering, disk brakes, etc. along with an engine change and bodywork. Four years have gone by and I haven't done squat to it because of the usual reasons: time and money. I now have the urge to get started on it again, but I still don't have a full handle on the two necessary resources so it will be a slow go. I will be documenting the dissassembly and rebuilding and will be searching "Stovebolt" for members who have "been there/done that"... especially those that have '41-46 Chev/GMCs or trucks of similar construction (sorry, I don't need to know how to install trim on a 70's Fleetside, etc.). I've already got a
Fatman M-II IFS and ECI disk brake setup and will be doing a slight modification of the frame to bring the IFS up a few inches closer to stock height. So there you have it... wish me luck. I welcome suggestions how to use Stovebolt to help me along (20,000 pages is a lot of reading material!). PS: if anyone is looking to buy a '69 El Camino SS396, that would sure help toward the "lack of funds" reason for prolonging the reconstruction of the '42. Also... if I don't answer you, it may be because I don't know how to. You can always reach me at [email protected] Cheers.

Hi George.
Yours is a familiar story...especially the part about cash and time! wink
Without doubt, this is the most informative and fun Chevy truck forum around.
You will find all the info you will ever need, and some you might not....! grin

BTW I would love the Elky, but I've got this dang truck to finish!

Welcome George, sounds like a lot of work but it can be very rewarding ...as well as frustrating at times. Many here have been there and done that more than once so take advantage of the vast knowledge and resources here. I'm sure you'll have a few buddies working on the same truck and issues that you all will help each other along the way.
Just do a little each day. You'll get there and we are here to help you. AND there is no such thing as a stupid answer.... you may get ribbed every now and then.... but likely from someone who has already asked a "stupid question". Do not suffer in silence. Great folks here at the bolt.

Well, here I am again. Several years have gone by and the '42 is still apart. I sold the El Camino but in the meantime (last year) I picked up a '55 2nd series and spent a year getting it on the road while my '56 sedan delivery and the '42 are crying for help. The '55 is now my daily driver. See it plus the '42 and others at www.picturetrail.com/motthollow. I wrote one reply plus one new thread in the driveline forum tonight but it never posted on the site. I'll check tomorrow. I'll also try to update my profile if there is one. (?) Cheers. www.picturetrail.com/motthollow.

George, welcome back. Not sure why your post didn't work but there is a new thing here where "new" guys have to be approved by the moderator. Its a deal to try cut done on folks that are spammers and so on..... Your approved now!!

Don't get disgusted. There is MUCH to learn here and that means navigating around, making sure you have your profile correct as well as a vast amount of tech tips and probably about 3000 Gallery submissions and pictures. Just take your time. Ask question all you want. Guys here are great to help...and we have a IT forum where you can ask computer questions if something here is not working correct. Looking forward to sharing wrenches with you in the Garage..

Good luck, keep us posted.
