Hello,

I am putting a 1953 Chevy 1/2 ton back together. It has a side mount spare, but I have new bedsides. Does anyone know where the mounting bracket goes? Pics without the tire and measurements would be great.

Side spare mounts were usually either aftermarket or fabricated from the under bed carriers. Mount a tire on a wheel and see where it needs to go. Give yourself a little extra room in case you decide to use a larger tire later on.

They were a factory option on the half ton in '53 with an inset in the driver side fender. I wsa looking to see if anyone else had one that could take the measurement.

Section 10, Sheet 3.00 of the 1947-1954 Chevrolet Assembly Manual shows detailed instructions with measurements on how and where it is mounted.

The sheet in the Factory Assembly Manual might be useful but be careful. The bed side-panels/rails changed in 1954 (the drawings in the FAM are for a 55-1st truck).

There is a flat top in 54/55 but an angled top in 53. The mounting brackets for the spare carriers for 53 and 54 are necessarily different (to bolt to the differently angled tops of the different rails). Thus, the bolt holds may or may not be correct.

The measurements in the FAM might not be correct for a 53 bed. However, the bed-front to fender distance is the same, so you can most likely use that important measurement from the FAM.
