I had a busted oil line running from the bottom of the oil filter to the side of the engine...i am replacing that...any other oil line checkup suggestions? cleaned up sludge in oil filter canister and plan on the oil pan too.... With the fuel line, there seems to be a little fuel filter just below the oil filter....any suggestions on how to check that out? and Finally for this post at least the brakes...does anyone have a diagram of the brake line??....i know i need new brake lines.....when i have the truck off, in neutral, and mash the brake pedal i have no pressure...should i? Thank you all for your help! 53GMC

It has small orifice in the fitting on the head. Be sure to check that this is clear for oil flow. It doesn't take much to plug it. Fuel filter- just change it and you know its clear. Brakes- you should have pressure in the system when you step on the pedal.

It has a piece of flex hose that will be brittle. Jim Carter sells this in a kit with the flex line for the oil pressure gauge. It is part no. mb141 http://www.oldchevytrucks.biz/47_55/t1.asp?page=118 The filter you are talking about is probably part of the fuel pump. There is an element available. Jim Carter has most of the parts you will need. A 53 would have manual brakes so it doesn't make any difference if the engine is running. You are probably out of brake fluid if the vehicle has been sitting for a while. The master cylinder is under the driver side floor board. There is about a 4 inch round plug in the floor board that you pry up to check the brake fluid. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | I dont know about your engine, a 228 I think, but the 270 has a small line that enters the head at the front which supplies oil to the rockers. In addition to this, that fitting has a very small hole which limits oil flow. You dont want to use a standard fitting on this because it will literally pump way to much fluid up top and leave her dry below. When I replaced the fittings on mine, I filled the fitting with solder and drilled it out to the appropriate size. Log onto the oldgmctrucks.com site and do a search. You can come up with the right size there as I cant recall off the top of my head. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2003 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2003 Posts: 586 | The oil filter you need is a Wix 50001. As far as the oil and gas lines, i have some pictures at my web site under '51 GMC Project. Another thing you need is a copy of the factory assembly manual. Its for a Chevy, but it will still come in handy. Also, go to the following web site: oldgmctrucks.com This has a lot of the information you are looking for.
