I was wondering if anyone has refinished the wood in their bed with out removing it. Mine just needs to be freshened up a bit, the woods still fine but needs to be refinished. I just wanted to lightly sand it and polyurethane it. I don't really want to remove it if I don't have to, but I don't want to scratch up the stainless steel pieces either.

I guess if only the top needs a touch-up, you could pull the stainless and lightly sand and re-coat. Others may think differently.

The folks at Mar-K did a test on different finishings a while back that I think you will find interesting without me going into a history story here. A search will probably give you more reading than you want. I also think Mar-K has the test still going on. Its very interesting and may help you make a decision.

I will do some searching first before proceeding. Leonard my slats are getting some mildew too toward the front of the bed where water pools unti it drains. I think I will try your idea, I really don't want to unbolt the floor either.

the way i did it was actually pretty easy.
like i said, after i pressure cleaned all the mildew off, i waited a week for it to dry.
took a sanding block and sanded the wood, taped it up, stained it one day, the the following day i started applying 2 coats per day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon.
you cant tell by my pics, but i should have sanded the wood a little more, since i have a slightly rough finish, and i really need to sand it maybe one more time, then add another few coats of clear. but it was a lot easier than removing all the strips and wood, and really came out pretty good.
