My '65 has the simplest heater: one knob pulls out for heat, and turns for fan speed. There's a lever under the dash for defrost diversion.
My question pertains to under the hood. On the heater core housing is a lever that operates a flapper "above" the heater core, but there's no cable or other way to operate it from inside the cab. Is there supposed to be? Any details would be helpful.

My '65 has the same knob pullout and twist for fan speed control . But I don't remember there being a lever under the hood ? I have replaced my heater core in the past and have had the entire heater box out and I truly don't remember any lever ? But it has been a while and my old memory fails me at times ?

Just went out to the parking lot to look...I question my memory from time to time wink
A shaft comes out of the (passenger) side of the box, about 3" from the firewall, and "levers" down. In fact, there's an oblong hole in the firewall right there!
It's entirely possible that someone else modified this system before I got it, and I don't know what all the differences are.
I'll be replacing the blower motor before next winter, and thought I'd make sure everything else is functional while I'm at it.

The deluxe heater in my 64 has a cable that comes through the cowl and is attached to a lever outside of the airbox that mounts to the cowl in the engine compartment. The cable from the dash single lever goes through the cowl and attaches to that lever. 60-63 cable is located on the inside of the airbox and controls the coolent valve. 64-66 controls the air flap inside the airbox.

Thanx, guys. I must have a "hybrid" system.
Does anyone know what's the function of the air flap inside the airbox?

We need pictures.

A digital camera is one of the best investments in tools you will ever make for working on these old trucks.

You can take pictures and ask : what is this that is broke? Where can I get one? How do I fix it?

The lever in the heater core box (under hood) is for the deluxe heater and diverts the cowl vent air thru the heater core for hot air or around the heater core for cool air.
The thrift air is the controls you describe on your dash and the lever (heat/defrost) on the diverter box (not sure that is the proper name) under the dash. This control is a manual adjustment, not controlled by a lever on the dash.
If you choose to make the whole thing a deluxe heater set up you will need to get both the diverter box and control levers.
The control levers are available aftermarket, haven't seen the diverter box in a catalog so this is most likely something that you would need to search for at a boneyard.

I get it, Rusty. It would be nice to be able to control the temperature of the heated air coming in...I think I'll rig up another push/pull cable to the heater core box. I don't mind reaching under the dash for the heat/defrost control.
Thanks much for the clarification.
It would be nice to be able to post photos directly into replies.

For what it is worth, spend the effort in making this work. My 66 had the Thrift-Air heater as described with the push pull knob with fan speed. I am a fan of ventilation, so this was bad. All I had were 3 different speeds of hot air. So I just left the floor vents open. I would have loved a deluxe set up, but could never find one in a junkyard, or for resonable money on ebay.

Good Luck!!
