I picked up the '58 a couple of months ago & have not had much time to tinker. Long story - but you know how it goes - ran when parked 15 years ago etc. etc.

I rebuilt the carb a couple of weeks ago.

The truck runs when I pour gas down the carb, but due to 15 year old gas I had not hooked it up to the fuel tank - until now!

I pulled the beater out of the garage this morning (101 degrees today) & started to work on the fuel issue.
I pulled the tank - took it to the local car wash & spent $1.50 on hot soapy high pressure water to clean it up - tank looks like new!

The floors are solid - but they needed some attention too.

so after a little cleaning & some spray in bed liner - they look pretty good too.

So I ran new fuel lines - or cleaned & blew out what I had & got everything hooked up. I put in 5 gallons of fresh gas & gave it a shot.

To my disgust it wouldn't get any gas. Now I think I know why it was parked so many years ago.

Anyone know where I can find a fuel pump?

How do you remove this thing anyway? I didn't see any bolts - but then I gave up for today - I'll look closer later.

I cranked for a good 5 minutes - not a drop of fuel at the pump. It has to be the problem.

Again when I shoot gas down the carb it kicks to life & runs OK (little rough but I'll worry about that later).

Will a standard fuel pump from a small block chevy fit?

There's 2 bolts that hold it in. They can be hard to see from the top, as they sit just below the diaphram housing. Looks like you may have a dual action pump, which provids vacuum for the wipers. Not sure if that type is available new, but you should be able to get a new standard type pump from the local parts store (the may have to order it).
While a smallblock pump looks similar, only turned over, it is actually different. They do not interchange.

NAPA and other local parts suppliers should be able to order a standard fuel pump or a dual-action fuel pump. Rockauto.com has a variety of brands of both pumps.

Have you checked to be sure fuel is getting to the pump? It may take a little time to siphon the gas out of the tank and fill the lines and the pump. Try slightly opening the pump inlet line and start the truck using gas in the carb. This will purge air in the line and possibly get you going. A little messy though so be careful. I assume your gas is not fed out of the bottom of the tank thru a petcock that may be closed but out of the top of the tank where the sending unit is.

Right - the gas comes through the sending unit - Bone dry at the pump inlet. This is why I suspect it is the pump. I thought about priming the lines by siphoning the line at the fuel pump, but then I figured if the pump is bad why bother.

If its dry at the inlet it may not be getting there at all due to a blockage. Blow out the line from the tank to the pump to be sure. Good luck.

Why buy a new pump if you don't have gas to pump? Until I verified the line is clear I wouldn't throw any money at it.

I'd disconnect the line at the tank and at the pump and try to blow through it.

Be sure the lines are clear first. Mine would quit at 1/2 tank and found a hole in pick up tube. If you get fuel out blow lines or replace with rubber to test line for blockage. Be prepared to change oil sometimes a bad pump will dump gas into oil. You can also be sure of fuel delivery to pump this way

If there are any hoses on the line between the pump and the tank I'd at least check them for cracks or replace them if they're old. I've had a couple of old vehicles not start because the fuel pump was pulling air through an ancient cracked hose.

An easy way to check it is to run a hose from the pump down to a can of gas sitting on the ground under the truck. If the pump is working, it should pull the gas up from there and start the truck.

Cool pic - That is pretty much what I did after the carb rebuild before I cleaned out the tank.

I did blew the lines & sent carb cleaner through them when I cleaned the tank. I also replace all soft hoses with brand new fuel hose. All lines are clean & in good condition.

Just received the UPS notification - should have the new pump in a day or two. Hopefully I will have it up & running this weekend???
